Call it what you like - Savanna Cherry - Cherry of the Rio Grande -
Eugenia Calycina or Eugenia Involucrata or a Hybrid of both?
They are FAST growing and FAST fruiting.
My mother plants went from germinated seeds to fruiting in 3 years.
The seeds of this selection have a very high and very fast germination rate too.
These are authentic Nelita seedlings grown from the fruit I grew from the seeds I received from Miguel in Portugal.
Here’s Miguel's YouTube movie about this variety:

Hi Kevin,
I am interesting with the Nelita seedlings, how old are the seedlings? Do you have a picture of them?
I have couple seedlings that I brought the seeds from Miguel.
Thanks,
Al
-
These were planted this past Spring.
Here's a typical seedling:

Where were you with these a few months ago? I paid nearly the price of one of your plants for one seed and i'm afraid I might have killed it.

Sorry to hear that... Well I'm here now!
With plenty of Nelitas for everyone.

Whats your opinion of the fruit Kevin?
-
They look so good and I have a seedling that got a bit roasted in the sun. Looks like there is a bit of a species complex going on here with free genetic intermingling. Brings a new light to 'crossing the Rio Grande'. Nelita looks to have the biggest and most appealing fruit in the group.
-
Whats your opinion of the fruit Kevin?
Larger and much more productive than my standard COTRG.
There is some subtle variation in shape and flavor... granted I only have 5 mature plants.
Mostly sweetish. Not astringent. With a lot of red pulp. Each fruit has several seeds... which sprout amazingly quick... so it wouldn't take you long to have quite a collection.

I am considering getting one. How is the taste vs Barbados cherry? Thanks
-
Sort of an Apples and Oranges comparison...
To me... Barbados cherry has a crisper texture and tastes like your eating a rose blossom. Sounds weird but they are nice!
A good Cherry of the Rio Grande has a juicer, softer, plum (Prunus) like texture and an apricot/peach flavor.
Someone else may want to weigh in with their culinary opinions.
Kevin Jones
-
Yes... This is a fast maturing species and will set fruit within 3 years from seed!... at least it did for me... on all 5 of my mother plants.
You are getting a nice head-start with these seedlings too... Thanks!
Kevin jones
-
Hi Kevin,
Do you still have any available for sale?
Also, are they savannah cherry or cherry of the rio grande? Ben's Beaut Variety?

Always glad to hear of a safe arrival and happy customer.
Thanks.
Kevin
-
how cold hardy are those?
-
I treat them them as tropicals... for now all of mine are in containers in a cool greenhouse... tender, warm and happy!
I'm still experimenting with hardiness of these Nelita variants.
You could grow them up a bit, harden them off to cooler temps and set them out in a protected area like the south side of a building or windbreak.
My Run-of-the-Mill Cherry of the Rio Grandes (not Nelita) seem to have quite a bit of hardiness in a protected area with temps even down to the lower 20s in containers... should fare better in the ground in a similar area.
Here's a topic on COTRG hardiness you may find interesting:

Kevin

Wish I was going with them...

Hi Kevin
My COTRG kept dying back in Bradenton FL. What do I need to do to be able to grow them here?
Onur
-
TLC is what any plant needs... water, warmth, sunlight and feeding.
So... Why are yours plants dying?

I really don't know! Some nurseries said they didn't do well in Florida. They actually liked cooler climates better, probably with less humidity...
-
I live in Alabama... plenty of balmy sultry muggy high humidity days ... they grow fine here.

I forgot steamy...

Just wanted to say thank you to Kevin. I bought 4 different plants from him and all arrived healthy and in great packaging. He was also very communicative and easy to work with. Would buy again.
-
Great to hear about their safe arrival... and thank you for the kind words!
Kevin
-
Keen to get one, but how hardy will these be with the dry Vegas heat and winter temps that get in the low 30s?
-
(Yoda Voice) Planting outside I guess you are...
Gradually expose to full sun to prevent sunburn (It was growing in FULL Alabama sun here)
Mix lots of organic matter in the (large) planting hole...
Mulch well. Really well.
Water regularly for the first few weeks until it is established.
Lower 30s should not be a problem temp wise.
You can always throw a sheet or light tarp over it if you are worried on below freezing nights.
I left my mature Cherry of the Rio Grands (in containers) out all this winter as an experiment and they did fine.
It got down in the teens a few times too.
Or you can do like me... grow it in a large container and bring it in the greenhouse for the winter.
Good Luck!
Kevin
-
Sounds good master Jedi! Sign me up.
-
I know you have challenging soil conditions in Nevada... organic matter and mulch will really help.
Kevin
-
I planted mine in a semi-shade in z 10a and it's growing surprisingly very fast. I need to measure the height but I think in the last 2 weeks 2 sets of leaves appeared. There are also a few side branches are taking off. I added half a bag of good soil into the planting hole well mixed with the native one
-
Under your ideal conditions they do grow quickly... Good Luck!
Kevin
-
I have mine thriving in full Alabama sun!
Kevin
-
Glad to hear they arrived so quickly... thanks for the feedback and kind words!
Kevin
-
Lots of nice ones...
