Tropical Fruit Discussion / Makok Sapodilla Tree
« on: July 21, 2022, 11:19:32 AM »
Writing about my Makok sapodilla tree which has much new growth.  I would like to keep this tree small & cut off the ends.
Concerned that this would affect new fruit.
I can't seem to find information on whether this tree is like citrus and I am not supposed to cut ends or if this sapodilla fruits
anyway.
Guess I need an explanation as the videos I've seen do not show this.
Thanks for everyone on this forum.

I had thought 2 of my citrus were ok when they began putting out new shoots. Tree over 10 years old.

The freeze was really bad.  Even though we covered our clementine orange, it is only supposed to go down to 32 degrees.
The temp went down to 12.
We had the entire trunk cut back cutting down all the black.

Now the shoots are dying and the 6" trunk is getting black.

What is this ?  Can I treat it with anything ?
Thanks in advance for help.  Carol

« on: February 27, 2021, 05:32:37 PM »
Does anyone now about the Shangrila Mulberry.  Supposed to be for the south.
Lost the Geraldi Dwarf in 13 degrees.  Not supposed to die at that temp.
Would like to replace with another Geraldi, Shangrila and maybe an Oscar.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hard Freeze My Avocado & Trop Trees
« on: February 26, 2021, 09:12:51 AM »
We had a very Hard Freeze in Houston.

I have just begun looking at some of my tropical fruit trees - avocados, mangoes, etc.  They were covered well, but since the elec went out, these trees have suffered.  Checking this morning for the first time, the base under the graft and several inches above the graft are still green.  This area was covered with foam for plumbers pipe.

I know many have experience.  Does anyone know if these trees will continue to die or will this area stay green maybe living.  Thank you.  We all need help with this.
Whether I need to dig these trees up & replant.

Thanks in advance to all.  Carol

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Nagami Kumquat in a Pot
« on: December 30, 2020, 07:31:07 PM »
I sure am hoping someone will answer this question.  I have an issue with the Nagami Kumquat.  This year for the first time, I have experienced so much fruit drop.  The fruit develops a black round spot then falls off the tree before maturing.  Is there any organic means of treating this tree or just pluck it up.
All the fruit has been picked before rotting.  There was mostly 1 black spot on each fruit and then it would rot.

 thank you, Houston, Carol Smith

We have had a Starfruit tree for over 5 years.  Was producing many, many fruits.
The last 2/3 months the small branches have been dying at the tips and the leaves
are turning yellow and falling.
Also the fruit is so small maybe 1 1/2 inches.
I don't know what is wrong with our tree.

If anyone has had similar problems or could help us with these symptoms, please respond.

I could buy a new tree, but I'm afraid to put the new tree in the same soil.

Thanks in advance, Carol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado Issues - MEXICOLA GRANDE
« on: April 11, 2019, 05:08:28 PM »
Hi, I am trying to get some help with my potted Mexicola Grande Avocado.  I potted it with a type of
lava rock.  It has been out in the sun with the temp rising to 92 for 2 days now.  Suddenly I noticed
the black on the main stem.
I don't know if it is fungus or the sun or what is the issue or too much watering.
I also have a Pancho Avocado potted in the same way right next to the Mexicola.

I moved the Mexicola into mostly shade, but I am asking for help with this issue.

I saw that someone put hydrogen peroxide into their watering mixture and their avocado
recovered.  Also maybe I need to remove the mulch on top.

Thanks in advance for any help.  Carol

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air Layering - What Age Tree ?
« on: January 25, 2019, 11:09:22 PM »
I have been studying air layering and haven't tried yet.  My main question is "What age tree can you Air Layer".
I have a wax apple that I would like to try, but it is only 3 or 4 years old.  There are 3 3 ft long branches only.
What would happen to this tree if it were too young.
Also, a Longan tree that I bought at a nursery and have had for 2 years.  It is maybe 4 ft tall.

Is there a rule of thumb for air layering.  Thanks !!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Joey Avocado in the Freeze
« on: February 21, 2018, 11:15:05 PM »
Hoping someone as good advice on maybe saving this tree.  Rather pitiful looking now since the
temps went down to 20 around 3 weeks ago.
It has only been in the ground around 2 1/2 months.
We put pipe insulation around the trunk around 20" up then covered with
heavy material.
This Joey may be able to take cold temps, but maybe not as an newly planted tree.

Also, I was watching a video on cold hardy avocados.  Someone posted that there were really no cold
hardy avocados - that vendors were just trying to sell them.

Is there anything to be done to help this tree recover.
Thanks in advance, Carol in Houston

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kari Star Fruit - Chambola
« on: December 30, 2016, 08:01:42 PM »
:)I would like to get some information on my Kari Star Fruit.  I would like another of the same variety.  Instead of buying another Kari, I would like to know if I could drape one of the branches down into a pot.  Would this root another Kari Star Fruit.  The mother Kari is a grafted variety.
I am guessing that this technique could apply to any fruit that is grafted.  Isn't this called layering ?

Thanks in advance for all the knowledge !!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Disease on my Apple Tree
« on: February 06, 2016, 12:13:02 AM »
I am asking how to treat this issue with my Apple Tree.  Some of the leaves are Yellow with black spots.
I was going to plant a Jujube tree near this apple, but now I am thinking it may not be a good idea.
Thanks Carol
