Air Layering Balls
« on: November 25, 2020, 10:27:38 PM »
Anybody tried any of theses Air Layering Balls?:

I ordered a bunch of them from Ebay.... very nice and a good price.
Thought I might try my hand at air layering... and wondered if anyone had any suggestions?

Thanks.

I tried similar ones. Worked well enough on figs in late spring.

I also purchased some last spring. Tried to air layer white sapote and lychee. The hole where the branch goes had too much space allowing air to get in. Also it wiggled and was not secure. They may work for some people, but I will just stick to the traditional method. I have had more success using plastic water bottles. Just my 2 cents.

Hmmm... maybe a foil wrap would help?

Plastic bottles huh. That could work if you had the right ones with pliable thinner plastic.

I think he's referring to individual serving water bottles.

It's a gimmick I just use zip lock bags and they work perfectly

I also use zip lock bags and have excellent results. I use to use the traditional method but the zip lock bag method is significantly faster. Once they’re rooted out, you have to cut both ends of the bag to release the roots but that’s the only tricky part. I believe “Grafting Examples” has some YouTube video. That’s where I first saw the technique.

I use the thin plastic bags you use at the grocery store for meat and vegetables and fill them up with moss and then use twine to attach them to the cut after you cut the bag in half. The important part is to keep the tree watered well and also I use rooting hormone which speeds up the root growing.
