Hi Bryan - sent you a PM yesterday.  - Jen

I, too, placed an order over a month ago, and my account shows the order is still "processing". But I've always had good service from RPS, and I don't think they are scamming us.  It's much more likely that this is a COVID-related delay. I'm not sure if mail service between here and Germany is at all reliable right now, so I'm going to give them some more time before I get concerned.

FYI, Har Mahdeem has a really good hand pollination video on YouTube. In this video he shows what the beetles look like, and gives pollination instructions.

Sounds like possible over fertilization and too much sun exposure.  Thanks all, for your help!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Young Pitangatuba Decline
« on: May 25, 2020, 07:05:27 PM »
Hello - A couple of my pitangatubas are not doing well. Many of the leaves are getting reddish spots.  Here are a few photos:

The plants are in full sun, they get plenty of water. The problem seemed to begin after I fertilized them (used liquid VPG Fertilome). I'm wondering if maybe my soil blend is too dense - maybe waterlogged roots? I thought I was using a well draining soil blend - it's a bagged mix called "Menehune Magic".
I'm grateful for any your ideas about how to help my plants. - Jen

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rambutan disease?
« on: November 04, 2018, 06:26:55 PM »
Looks like a nutrient problem. Rambutans are very sensitive to chemical fertilizers, especially when small plants. Is that osmocote granules? Suggest switching to organic ferts. Flush out with water to remove excess salts and nutrients.

Yes, it IS osmocote!  Thank you for your suggestion, Oscar!  I have been a little heavy handed with the fertilizer recently, so will give it a flush and try the organic.  And my other rambutan seedlings as well. :-)  Mahalo

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rambutan disease?
« on: November 04, 2018, 05:02:22 PM »
Hello - I am having a problem with my yellow rambutan - the leaves are turning a grayish tan and I’m worried that I will lose the tree. I suspect some sort of soil disease but am looking for inpyt. The mangosteen to the right also recently lost a leaf, but I think the browning on its leaves is from earlier sunburn.  Any ideas? Can my rambutan be saved with a fungicide or something else?

Hello Han Sen - do you think you will get any more king rambutan seeds this year?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Plantnet app
« on: October 10, 2018, 06:59:30 PM »
Have not tried other ones.  After trying this one, I saw no need to try others.

It has 4,3 out of 5 stars on Android. Are you sure it's the same app?  It's sometimes spelled "Pl@ntNet", although in the app store it's spelled "PlantNet Plant Identification".

I think its the same one.  What the heck, I think I'll try it.  :-)  Thanks for your recommendation.  - Jen

Hi Karen - Have you tried any of the other plant ID apps?  I went to the apple app store and found a few different apps for identification.  I notice Plantnet has only 3/5 stars, which is fewer than a couple of the other free apps. (Not that this is an absolute reason not to get it, I'm just curious).   I like the idea of using an app, but I was wondering if you tried the other apps, and why you selected this one?  Thanks. - Jen

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Vegetative propagation from fruit tissue?

Very interesting! Amazon has this kit for the reasonable price of $64, but there are zero reviews.

The best tissue and simplest it's meristem which contains undifferentiated cells.
Virtually all parts of the plant can be used to cloning via callus induction. Even from a single viable cell, but this requires expensive equipment and special techniques. Each plant has a different need and requires chemicals to be used.

For instance it's possible to take a lime from store and grow callus from it, then shoots and finally root the shoots. Or use the shoots and micrograft them to a rootstock.

Very very interesting. So this can be done with lime skin? Or which part of a purchased lime? So would this be possible from a mango skin or piece of stem?

Who here has experience doing tissue culture? Thanks!

I did some tissue culture work as part of my Masters degree project (selected loblolly pine cultivars).  I'm surprised to see a kit offered for general use, as what struck me the most about tissue culture production is the absolute need for a sterile environment. It is easiest to keep things sterile in a laboratory, where you can work under dust removing hoods and keep an alcohol flame burning to sterilize your cutting tools.  Your agar medium starts out sterile but it's so easy to introduce unwanted organisms to it as you transfer your plant tissues.  I had issues with keeping sterile even in a lab - I can't imagine trying to do it at my house.  That said, I must say I am intrigued by the kit for sale and might even buy one!  :-)

Thanks, SteveO and Cookie M!  I'd really rather not have to cut off the main stem, so I will try your suggestions. Aloha. - Jen

i would spray or paint with steri-prune or something similar to seal the wound

It's pretty deep - I can try to seal it, or do you think the whole thing should be cut off?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rollinia deliciosa problem
« on: September 05, 2018, 12:24:11 AM »
My Rollinia deliciosa has a black spot that I am worried about.  I noticed it a few months ago and posted about it in a Facebook fruit group but there was a general lack of interest, so thought I’d try here. Is this a fungal disease?  There do not appear to be any insects around. The tree seems to be doing okay above the spot but is the spot likely to cause problems in the future? What do you think are my best steps to ensure that the tree will continue to grow and perhaps provide fruit one day? Thanks for any advice!

Thanks for these suggestions! Do you know of herbaceous plants similar in size to bananas and papayas? Or perhaps non-fruit tree-like plants of that size?
gingers

Whats the largest one that you know of? Can it rival a banana or papaya "tree"?
Tree tomato (cyphomandra betacea) gets quite tall. I had one in a pot in Portland, OR that was about 6-7'.  It had a decent trunk diameter as well.  Not as tall as some papayas, but decent size.

I bought some seeds from Dragonfruit101 on this forum a couple of months ago.  He suggested I water them (once sprouted) with club soda, as it helps to aerate the soil and provide the seedlings with minerals.  I can't really tell one way or another, but I thought I'd mention it to you all.  - Jen

Hi Maryoto,

Everything arrived in excellent condition! I have quite literally never received a package so quickly from your region! It was sent out on the 12th, but came in on the 20th of the same month!! WOW... Everything was in great shape and arrived at an UNBELIEVABLE speed! I still can't believe how fast this package got here.

Thanks!

Paraponera

Where in the US are you located? My package was seized by US customs and I received an empty envelope...Glad you received yours.

SoTasty, you need to go to the USDA APHIS web site and fill out the paperwork for a permit 587 (import small lots of seed from foreign countries).  When your permit is approved, APHIS will send you labels and a permit that you send to the seed vendor, they will use the label on your seed package, sending it directly to the incoming port city where there is a parcel inspection (Miami, Honolulu, Seattle, etc.).  Then the parcel comes to you after inspection.  It has taken me awhile to learn all this, finally got my permit, and hopefully getting my first seed order from overseas soon!  - Jen

if you wait a little bit longer, i can send you fresh seeds or just germinate and send when ready.

Palolo, I'd be into that.  I've been wanting to try to grow those.  How is the flavor/texture of your fruits?  I'd like to buy some seeds from you (if possible) when you have them.
Jen
