How do you tell the difference between leaf notchers and Sri Lanka’s? They look identical

2
First pic looks like leaf notcher weevils, they attack my graham mango tree and that tree only for some reason. I have a nam doc mai about 15 feet away that they do not bother.

Scale could be the problem too, which only affects my NDM and not the graham. These bugs seem to like the taste of some and dislike others

I bought some bayer systemic insecticide, it killed off all the scale but only slowed the weevils. It got rid  of the leaf hoppers as well. It’s weak compared to the strengths of insecticide you can order off eBay with the same ingredient but it worked for me

Almost every mango I had this year was really watery and not very enjoyable

Or am I off completely ? Friend sent me this out trying to figure out what type of mango he has

Do I have anything to worry about with these sharpshooters? All I could find is that they are a problem in California when it comes to grapes, but really nothing else useful. Yesterday after I picked out as many weevils and scared off as many shooters as possible I applied Bauer garden and citrus systemic thru the roots.

Unrelated to mangos but my blood oranges have a caterpillar that looks like bird or lizard crap tearing it up too

Out of curiousity why is it that neither weevil or sharpshooter attack my NDM? Literally all my fruit trees are under attack, except this tree. It amazes me

6
Looks like sharpshooters to me. I believe there is a possibility that they can transfer diseases because they suck the juice from new growth.

Simon

Oh wow they are actually called sharpshooters... I thought it was a hopper because it kinda resembled it

Well summer has brought weevils to my mango tree and my peach tree. For some reason they are only eating my Graham mango and Flogrande peach, but my Nam Doc Mai has perfect leaves 15 feet away. I'm not sure if they are little notchersnor Sri Lanka weevils... but I did a imidacloprid treatment (bayer lol)

I noticed these things huddling together and playing hide and seek with me, what are they? They were focused on the stem... borer?

My poor tree is getting bombarded by hoppers and weevils... good thing it's a vigorous tree. Things flushing like crazy

I did not detect any coconut flavor in my Graham mangoes. The ones I notice coconut flavor in are Pickering and Choc Anon. Pickering being the better flavor and texture of the two. I have never eaten a Julie, but the Graham has a great tangy, spicy flavor with smooth flesh. Definitely not your typical mango flavor. So, you think that last year was an "On" year for Graham? i hope they are always that flavorful, but I bet the rain will wash them out a little. Hope it slows down soon ;D

I'm probably describing it wrong but there was definitely some kind of pronounced flavor that got really intense scraping the peel. I found it very pleasant to my tastebuds

Do you taste a coconut flavor near the peel or was that just in my head? i wish my tree held a few that woulda been great. I'd rather lose my NDM's than the Grahams  ;)

My Graham also dropped its fruits for a couple years as they started to mature. Last year I got about 25 and they were all very, very good. Nice strong flavor that I know some don't like. Very unique. I'm looking forward to tasting them again with sweet anticipation!

Man I should have done my research lol. I have tasted graham from a fellow who sells mangoes off boyton beach and it was awesome. Strong taste with a coconut-ish tropical hint near the peel. I guess he was having a good year. His alampur baneshan was great too. Guess I'm just a fan of spicy mango

I don't regret it tho. As long as I get that goodness every couple of years I can live with it, plus I got others to make up for it.

When I bought the tree last year in spring as a 15 gal it didn't make any flowers, it just grew. This year it made a few winter panicles that made pea sized fruit and aborted all but that was no surprise. Then it made a few more and the 2 fruit made it to a tennis ball size and dropped as well. Is this normal for this tree? NDM is younger but managed to take fruit to maturity. I really wanted atleast a few this year  :P

Pic is from march. It's grown more

I had scale on a tree and I remember flipping a deformed leaf to see a bunch of flat waxy looking humps. Scale. I wiped most off and applied a systemic pesticide to the roots and they never came back

I only have 2 actual NDM mangos on my little tree and I've been so anxious with all the weather lately that something would go wrong and they would get ruined. Luckily they are still hanging in there. Should I pick them? They are pretty big but I just don't wanna mess up my first mangos

No, not ready unless you are looking to eat them green.

Man I was tempted to pick them and let them get ripe in safety today. Glad I didn't

I use a mix of organic topsoil, mushroom compost, peat moss sphagnum, and a whole lot of earthworm castings with dr earth natural organic fruit fertilizer. Over a year and my trees are growing like crazy! My man doc is holding its first 2 mangos ever, I was worried they might split but so far so good!

Is this a common occurrence for so many types of mangoes to be pushing flowers?

I have a Haden, Graham and Nam Doc all in ground, all pushing flowers... tho they are pretty close to each other in terms of when ripe fruit is due, it's still seems kinda early?

Hey there.

I was surprised myself to find all 3 of my trees flowering. They are all young as well.  My graham is flushing flowers and regular growth. Grahams a beast despite the claims of it being a condo mango lol

bayer systemic insecticide for fruit/vegs worked well for me. I only had a scale problem with my NDM. No other tree had them

Also a bowl of water and a wet rag to get off the majority. After I scrubbed them off, they kept coming back for a while until the tree got the systemic poison up to the top leaves, then they dried out flaked off and haven't been back since.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 1st year mango trees made panicles, but?
« on: December 13, 2016, 03:41:39 PM »
the bud does look kind of short. But, I wouldn't worry about it. With time it will grow out of it.

I see water on the leaf, is that from rain?

don't water mango this time of year.  They like it dry when flowering.  Actually, I never water mango once it is established.  Hardly ever fertilize either.  They are basically care free trees. Hedging and pruning is important though.

Good Luck!

Yes it is rain. It's been rainy this past week in south Florida.

The Nam Doc is a strange tree compared to the other mango trees. I hope your right tho. Would be cool to get at least 1 fruit from each tree ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 1st year mango trees made panicles, but?
« on: December 11, 2016, 06:47:54 PM »
So my Haden, Graham, and Nam Doc Mai are all trying to make flowers, they are all new trees 1st year in the ground, between 7 gal and 15 gal trees.

All looks good except the Nam Doc has a 'Curl' going on? The panicle isn't growing straight, it's curving back down to the stem. Is this normal for NDM? I've heard of them having curly grown but not in the panicles. I usually fertilize and supplement all my trees with synthetic and organic fertilizers, also worm casting mushroom compost fish emulsion and more. But I stopped in the beginning of November due to winter season(even tho I'm in south Florida lol)

Can anybody weigh in?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fertilizing mango trees in November ?
« on: November 07, 2016, 07:35:43 PM »
Thanks guys, the trees are all young, I was shooting for growth but if fruiting happens I'll take it.

I've been using fox farm marine cuisine for the last 6 months, sorta like a hybrid synthetic with natural ingredients 10/7/7 powder/pellet fert. Supposedly time released. Seems to work well I haven't burned anything to badly and got a lot of growth this year

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizing mango trees in November ?
« on: November 06, 2016, 12:22:30 PM »
I'm wondering is it a bad idea to give my trees one last dose of fertilizer down here in south Florida zone 10b

The reason I want to is because I haven't fertilized since late September and the last flush had some weak and deformed looking shoots and leaves, but nothing too bad and only 2 shoots out of 7 on one tree were deformed/weak.

So should I wait til next year or is it ok?

What is the reason people generally avoid fertilizing in the winter time anyway? Less sun and temperatures?

I had fruit on mine last year, and in Western Davie we weren't even close to 50 hrs.
The fruit isn't large but plenty enough where you might want to thin whats on the tree.

Well that's good news, how are the fruit? If you could go back would you have done a different tree?
