What is your favorite Atemoya?
« on: December 18, 2012, 11:04:54 AM »
What is your favorite Atemoya?  What is your favorite cultivar as far as taste goes?  Do you have a second favorite?  What is your favorite one as far as production goes?  Pick any from around the world including U.S., Israel, Australia, etc.  :)

Are you going to plant a tree soon?  I'd like to get one or two atemoyas in the ground this winter.  I've never tasted any (but I love cherimoyas) so I don't know for sure which ones to choose.  From past discussions on this forum, Gefner and Phet Pakchong seem like good choices for South Florida.  Tropic Sun and Paxton Prolific out of Australia sound like good ones, but I don't know if/when they will make it to this continent.

This is the advice offered to commercial growers in Queensland.KJ Pinks is the same as Paxton Prolific.Overall I would put Paxton Prolic and Hillary's White ahead in the taste department. Some rate Maroochy gold,Late gold and Tropic Sun very highly and I am yet to try these fruit asthey are new or not suited to tropical climates like mine.Perhaps BMc can comment on the eating qualities of these atemoyas.I have productive gefner and african pride trees and recognize that they have fruit of lesser quality and are less productive than the topo cv's.

My local hardware stores have a huge range of fruit trees. In the atemoya range today there were paxyton prolific, gefner, african pride, pinks mammonth and hillary's white but not the golds and tropic sun I really wanted.I grabbed this grafted 3ft 6 inch PP for an expensive $25.This and HW were covered in flowers and along with TS flower at a small size and young age.

My lawn is dead as you can see after one of the most prolonged dry and hot periods for years. There has a series of very rainy years and rain right through the dry season. This year there have 8 consecutive months of drier and hotter weather than normal and only about 25% of normal rainfall. When will the rainy season start?

I was after one without flowers and more wood.I see there are a couple of flowers developing.

Mike, those are some great looking trees.  You guys are definitely ahead of the game in Australia with Atemoyas.  Keep up the good research.  :)

What would it take to bring Paxton Prolific and Tropic Sun atemoya trees to the USA (Florida, in particular)?

great topic!

Of the ones I've grown,

Phet pak chong was amazing,

Lisa is amazing and pretty much just as good as the best, but has a softer texture

Some other amazing fruits include,
priestly (they get huge, and taste great with a softer consistency like Lisa)
geffner (wonderful taste consistently, firm fleshed)

Nuathong was the worst one I've grown, they're bland and look delicious..the flesh is pretty firm.

I wish I could say I've tasted more atemoyas!  but I think that's all I've got to taste.

Did you know they're thinking about eliminating the words "amazing" and "awesome" from the English language? ;)

I already have gefner and Lisa.  On the hunt for 1 or 2 more moyas.  Seems like Mr. Mihn is worth a shot.  Anyone else in FL like Bradley, Priestly, or Page?

I was all-in on the phet pakchong atemoya, but now I am concerned since they may have gotten mixed-up with nuathong, when tasting reviews were made.

This is one case where ignorance is bliss. I only have a Geffner and I love it.

MikeT, I wish our hardware stores had fruit trees, hell I wish we had hardware stores period, they're going away.

Mike i don't see a dead lawn, i see plenty of space for more tree's !  :P

I only know PP and it's great, we also have normal Noina sugarapples who are good as well but PP is the best.

Why you guys don't have tree-shops? Here hardware stores are the most annoying shops of all, the salespersons are very annoying and dumb.

I have about 300 treeshops in 30 minutes driving. And they are still building more. ;D If i drive 1 hour i have 500 i guess, the 300 i know every single one of them.

BK that was 2012 a week before the rainy season began. My local mall has a Big W store that has a garden section with a good variety of tropical and oddly temperate trees. It just isn't hardware stores that have fruit tree selections.
I wonder how good the popular taiwanese atemoya named pineapple is.Now autumn has begun here the atemoyas Wil be in the supermarkets in days.

Mike now i remember it, your durian was having a very hard time then. Did it survive the drought?

We didn't have rain for 3 months or so, but i have 2 sprinklercomputers.

My PP is gone for a year now, i got 3 fruits of it and it grew too fast for my small garden. Got tired of pruning it. They are not on the markets yet but fruitseason is starting, we have durian allready.

honestly...after tasting the following atemoyas:

priestly
geffner
rosindeo perez (or however it's spelled)
Dream
Mr minhs(fruits were probably not top notch due to cultural or environmental conditions)
Lisa
Phet pack chong
Nuathong

the best so far are Lisa and Dream...

Dream is nice because of productivity, vigor, and fruit set without hand pollination (and very good cold tolerance)..the flavor was very similar to the cherimoyas I've tasted, same with the texture.....Lisa is nice because of the flavor, texture (unlike cherimoya), beauty, and size of the fruits (have seen some monsters at F & S)

PPC used to be my favorite....but now it has taken a back seat to Dream...mainly because it's not as vigorous or productive in my experience.

Picked up a PP for $5 last week. The tree was snapped in half, three nodes above the graft. Should come back. Hard to pass up a $45 discount...

I have tasted a few atemoyas .Trees grown in different places can be better or worse then a fruit you have tasted of the same kind. People taste fruit differently , with the complex flavor of atemoyas this can be true. So if you go with the top 5 that we can get you will be ok. This is my choices.
 Phet Packchong
 Lisa
 Geffner
 Priestly
 Bradley
 Dream I have not tasted
Mr. Minns I am growing now

On reflection chopping down my african pride and gefner trees that were productive and healthy was a good idea.Paxton prolific and Hillary white are superior and pinks mammoth is a colossus that tastes better as well.More tropical south Americans occupy the space left by my atemoyas.

I haven't had the chance to taste a PPC or an AP yet. So far I'm still smitten with Lisa. I have had a few Bradleys that had a delicious custard flavor, not as complex as some but still pleasant. I am looking forward to tasting Dream again at some point. It really did remind me of one of the cherimoyas a kind member sent me from California. I remember pineapple with some other flavors floating in the background.
Life is good
