For comparison, a bag of pine bark mulch from home depot/lowes/walmart is around $2.50 for about the same amount (~10lbs?)  I have at least 50 container trees so it would end up being expensive to replace mulch with coir for me.  I don't mind spending on perlite & turface because it doesn't rot so I re-use it when I re-pot

In my experience coco chips last much longer than pine bark.  Pine bark starts breaking down in a year while coco chips last 2-3 years.

Daytripper: I know that Hydroton and cat litter are physically different. What I meant to ask is are they functionally similar?

Hydroton is made out of clay, it will not absorb anywhere near as much liquid as modern kitty litter which is made from silica.

You can get coco chips on amazon or any hydroponics shop.  They last a lot longer than wood chips.  You can also use coco coir instead of the peat as it lasts longer too.

In my experience, HO works better than neem oil.

Day tripper, does your P. Lime only bloom during the summer months?

It will bloom in the winter but not as often.  I get about 3 blooms from may-sept while it is outside, and maybe 2 the rest of the year while indoors.  While indoors it sits in front of a south facing window with a 4 ft 4 bulb t5 above it which is on 8 hours a day.

My Persian lime blooms multiple times during the year.  It just started blooming again the other day.  This was the third time it bloomed since it went outside in May.  I have some limes that are just about fully ripened and I have pea sized limes.

What do you recommend?  I am looking for a germinator.

A solo cup, plastic bag, and the sun.

The miracle grow garden soil I get here on Long Island looks exactly the same as what is shown in Brian's picture.  It is supposed to be mixed in with the soil already in your garden.

I would remove the stake holding the tree up, it needs to be able to hold itself up without a "crutch" and gets stronger by blowing in the wind which the stake is preventing.

Clay balls can be found at any hydroponics store, google hydroton and you find many places to purchase them.

I used coco chips and choir for a couple of years and managed to almost kill a dozen young citrus trees plus had lots of trouble with veggies in potting blocks. In desperation I repotted all the trees (minus one that didn't make it) using E.B.Stone citrus and cactus mix and what a difference! After reading about other people's experience I came to the conclusion that there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the coco stuff but that it's very difficult to ascertain the quality. The main issue being salt content due to the way and location of the processing. I also found out from a local orchid nursery where I used to buy some coco choir in the past that they switched away from it due to quality/consistency issues. Again, it's not a fundamental problem with the material, YMMV for sure...

Coco often does have a lot of salt in it.  Even when I buy coco products that say they have been washed, I always give it a good drenching to wash away salts before use.

I am looking at buying a meiwa and am told they are grafted onto Trifoliate-Swingle.  I know Trifoliate is good for Meiwa's but I thought swingle was not, can anybody help me out with this?

I have heard that citrus trees grow larger leaves due to not enough light.  I have no first hand knowledge of this so not sure if it is true.

What do you guys think about coco husk as half of a potting mix?

Coco works great for potted citrus.  I use a combo of coco coir and coco chips and it works great.  Coco takes much longer to break down than peat and pine bark based mix's

My choice for lemon would be the lisbon, just your basic everyday lemon.  As for the lime I again would choose the basic everyday bearass/persian lime.  I would call the lime my best citrus variety as it makes so many cocktails better!

LED's have come a long way in the last 10 years.  I agree that only 5 years ago I would take a MH or HPS bulb over an LED, but now there are very high quality LED grow lights out there that can out perform an HID bulb using less electricity.  Unfortunately, as the popularity of LED lights has grown recently, the cheap knock offs have saturated the market with low quality bulbs that do not perform well that you see for sale on amazon or ebay.  A good place to get good info on lights that work well are on the marijuana growing message boards.  With the money  being made on weed now they have highly advanced the indoor growing technology to keep up with the demand for high quality results.

Red lights are a lower spectrum (around 3000k) and that spectrum is used by the plant for blooming.  Blue lights are higher spectrum (6500k) and the higher spectrum is what the plant prefers for vegetative growth.

Getting a very young tree to flower is one thing, getting a very young tree to bear fruit is quite another.
