Your fruit tree suggestions for SWFL
« on: October 18, 2014, 09:31:52 PM »
I have planted some fruit trees I am familiar with (mango, jackfruit, sugar apple, sapote, guava, papaya, pomegranate, banana). Also planted some that I am not that familiar with (lychee, atemoya, white sapote). Do you have any other favorites that grows and produces well in south west Florida that you consider as a must have?

How about avocado, sapodilla, longan, caimito, soursop.

You seem to have most of the bases covered. The only thing I'd add to the list is macadamia and Thai Giant jujube. Mine are doing surprisingly well. After years of trial-and-error, I've settled on trees that don't need much care. Early on, I made the mistake of planting things that were a little too "tropical" for this area (Venice).
The cold snap of January 2010, plus various citrus diseases, wiped out about half my trees, and taught me an important lesson. I'll stick with the tougher varieties.

Plant some of the newer Zills varieties of mangos like coconut cream, pineapple pleasure, piņa colada, sweet tart etc.  You can never go wrong with more mangos.

+1 on the Sapodilla recommendation. eg Alano. Year round fruits when the tree matures. +1 also on the newer Zill mango varieties.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

There have been plenty of good suggestions.  I would definitely add a longan and sapodilla. You mention sapote that could mean many things depending upon where you are from. I would definitely plant an avocado if it were my yard.  After that, I would be focusing on which varieties of these fruit trees you are planting.  Extending the season for mangoes, lychees, and avocados is an erstwhile endeavor. I personally also like to grow dragon fruit.  I would stay away from soursop in your area.  Its too tropical.  Macadamia is a nice tree but, especially if you have limited space, or unless you want to provide local squirrels a delicacy, it would not be in my top list.

I would suggest adding an emperor lychee tree (last of the season) in order to extend your season.  Kaimana is also an excellent midseason variety.

Mind you, the whole lychee season here is only about 6 weeks long.

Sweetheart / Hak ip  is early, kaimana is mid, emperor last

Jeez! Where do you live? The Ponderosa?
I jest. I've got a pretty good spread myself. Lotsa room for my tree addiction.
By the way: Hey Brad! Did you go to the tropical fruit tree sale in Nokomis yesterday?
I did, and bought a Sweet Tart mango and a Kadoda fig from Steve. The Master Gardeners were a no-show for some reason.
I told Steve about my "war on squirrels" and how this offensive made it possible for me to enjoy a tray full of roasted macadamias this year. He said I should host a dinner for the neighbors featuring roast squirrel and macadamias.
The problem with that, is if I have enough squirrels to feed the neighbors, then I won't have enough macadamias. On the other hand, if I have enough macadamias, then I won't have enough squirrels.
For the time being, I'm living in a "squirrel-free zone" and loving it!

Avocado, grumichama, papaya, figs, jaboticaba, barbados cherry, canistel, and some kind of garcinia are all good choices. Ilama and rollinia are really good annonas too, if you can manage to find them.

Don't ask for suggestions, that's my suggestion. Just stalk the forum, we discuss enough things on here that I'm adding a tree to my must have list pretty often.

Sorry, I keep forgetting that not everybody is as old as me, or perhaps wasn't even living in the U.S. when the TV western show "Bonanza" was popular in the 1950's and 60's. The Poderosa was the biggest ranch in the territory, upon which the Cartwright family lived.
Today's "Ponderosa" would probably be the King Ranch in South Texas, which spreads over several counties.

Canistel and an Avocado would round out the collection.

Ross sapote would be a good canistel.  Jackfruit would also do well in your location.
PM me if you want more advice on what varieties to choose.  The variety makes all the difference!!
