I have a 12 foot Tallman that I got on Craigslist for 100 bucks... worth keeping an eye out for them on there if you are willing to wait. I really like it for pruning because I can put the pole next to the trunk which I could not do with a standard ladder. I,m keeping an eye out for a short one, 6 or 8 footer for picking fruit on my citrus.
Oh, and only use them on dirt, never on hard surfaces, the pole has to bite into the ground.

Those are pill bugs, not beetles. I wonder if the problem is that the soil is too moist close to the trunk. It looks like the trees are being irrigated with soaker hoses? Try moving  the hoses farther out from the trunks, so that the soil is kept dry close to the trunk.

That second picture is definitely Pereskia aculeata... it is actually a leafed cactus. The first picture is too small for me to tell, does it have curved spines at the leaf nodes?

Have you tried growing Lychee Tomato (Solanum sisymbriifolium)? It is also spiny like that and the “tomatoes” are pretty tasty. I think Trade Winds had seeds if you find it interesting.

 The seeds are fairly large, it is hard to imagine someone accidentally swallowing one, without first choking to death before succumbing to any toxicity. The seeds also have a covering on them, looking quite simmilar to a large, fat orange seed.
 I don’t have any information on the seed’s toxicity, other that stuff I’ve read on forums.
 I’ve never noticed any sleepiness after eating white sapote.

I personally grafted a female scion onto a male carob tree. It worked exacly as I hoped with the female flowers being pollonated by the male flowers on the few branches I left in place.

I grew two carob trees from seed, one turned out to be male, the other female. I grafted a different female onto the male branches, leaving one or two male branches. All that said I think there are some that are hermaphrodite.
I guess my point is that even if you end up with a male tree it may actually be a plus. You can always graft on female branches leaving one male branch... making your tree kind of self pollinating.

I have two Chinese jujubes in the ground (Li and Lang), and one in a container (Sugar Cane). That is what I am attempting to hand pollinate the Indian jujube with.

ajbb: That is interesting that the two are graft compatable, I hadn't heard that before.

Yes, I believe I am giving it sufficient water. It is in a #5 nursery pot, looks healthy and
is growing and flowering, just not fruiting

Still, I am curious about the pollen compatibility question between The Indian and Chinese
jujube.

Will Indian jujube (ziziphus mauritiana) pollinate Chinese jujube (ziziphus jujuba) and vice versa?

I've been attempting to hand pollinate an indian jujube seedling with pollen from three different chinese cultivars with no takes as of yet. It may be that the seedling Indian jujube is still too young or that the pollen is incompatible. I would appreciate opinions on the subject.
