Maybe a different fertilizer would help. I have plenty of the special blend I use 100% slow release Nutricote 18-6-8 with all micros, you can't burn any tree with it. I owe you for all the fishing trips, just remind me!

You paid your part with gas money. But Ill gladly take some fertilizer from you, it is worth a shot!

I will suggest you just be patient,
It will start growing when it is good and ready.
I have had mango plants that got transplanted and just seemed to quit for a long time.
Then they took off.
I also have others that get in the ground and just explode.  I don't do anything different so it is either plant or location or time of year.

I was patient the first 2 years haha. But it has been 2 and a half years and it pretty much has not grown at all.

I agree with JulianoGS, your tree looks really good but you can clear some of the mulch away from the trunk. The leaf color doesn’t indicate your tree is lacking any nutrients but a bit of Nitrogen may stimulate faster growth. I would just keep taking care of this tree and hopefully it will start increasing its growth.

I have noticed that my PPK is significantly slower growing compared to my Lemon Zest and Orange Sherbet.

Simon

I did give it some fertilizer probably 2 months ago. I guess I could give it some more?

Also the buds at the tips of the branches have been like that since late last year. I dont think they have grown at all this year. I check on it pretty much everyday, like I do all of my trees, just hoping for the best and think maybe Ill see it starting to swell and turn green but nope...

Your tree looks health and I can see some shoots coming out.
Be patient, and I would remove some of the wood chips close to the trunk to about 6 to 9 inches away.

Thank you. Cant really see it in the pictures but there are some chips that go up to the trunk but it is only that one chip deep. There is like a little bowl around the trunk probably 6 inches around that only has that one tiny little layer. Everywhere else is around 4 inches or so.

Do you have a picture of your tree?

Maybe you can purchase and plant another LM and plant it close to this one. Sometimes you just get a dud tree. Hopefully it starts growing for you. A picture of the tree may help identify issues.

Simon

Sorry for all of the shadows, best I can do right now.

So this tree has only put out one flush of growth over a year ago. It is still only about a foot and a half tall at over 2 years in the ground....all of my other trees are growing fantastically. What do you guys think I should do?

8
Plant it and leave it alone for a while to grow before cutting it up.  It doesnt really look like it needs any trimming.  Once they get 3 or 4ft tall, I like to remove any limbs below about 1.5ft just to keep the canopy off the ground a bit.

Do you tip prune it like a mango to make it branch out? If so how long do you let the get before doing so.

I have seen a lot of lanky avocado trees and I would like for mine to be bushy if possible.

Very interested in seeing some replies on this. I am also interested in how to prune an avocado.

Hmm yeah mine seem to be a lot larger than Ruby X Supreme. Either way I guess I will just sell it as pink guava. They sure are delicious!

If they were anything like my previous tree (bought at home depot) I was going to pull it out and put something else there. Those were mostly all seeds that were basically rocks. This tree I have now has given me a new appreciation for guavas.

Thank you, I don’t know much about the actual different varieties, just that their are the Thai white and pink guavas plus I am sure some other general groupings.

Anyone else think it is a ruby x supreme or possibly a different variety? I want to sell cuttings when I prune it and don’t want to mislabel it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava ID help
« on: July 20, 2019, 09:01:22 PM »
I bought this guava tree last year and it was just to me as a pink guava from a lady I found online that was running her own little nursery.  I have no idea what kind this actually is. Can someone help me?

It is literally the beat guava I have eaten. I had another pink guava tree a few years ago and it produced good fruit but the skin was a lot thicker, had what seemed to be a million seeds in the inside and seeds were hard as rocks. This guava has thin skin, not that many seeds and what seeds it does have are easily crushable, some are even soft,  and not hard as rocks. They are also a lot bigger than the ones I grew previously. Any ideas?

* The guava in my hand is not the one I cut up..

If the tree has other branches, totally fine to tip the first flush. I have done this on nearly all the grafts on the cogs hall I'm topworking. The ones I didn't do it on was just because time got away from me...  I leave at least 2 leaves on the branch I tip.

perfect thank you!

Congratulations on the successful takes.
The trees I have bought were veneer grafted. The union is usually close to the
ground. I understand you should make your first prune when the center leader of your tree
is as high as your waist. Then you prune above a node. You are then looking for the 3-4 strongest
shoots that are evenly spaced. When the new shoots are 2 feet you tip them and so on.
A very good video has been shared on this forum.

Thank you. I was grafting onto an already mature tree so the grafts are more around shoulder height. I was just wondering if it was okay to prune them after their first flush hardens or should you wait for a couple flushed before you prune to cause branching. I have seen the videos you are talking about. Great videos on how to prune a mango.

15
Bump.....
I really don't want to kill them by pruning them too soon so if anyone can let me know when is the earliest I can prune it that would be great.

I have watched many videos on grafting but no one ever says how much you should let it grow before you prune it.

I have bought some at lowes and home depot before.

I just recently had 4 successful sweet tart grafts. Currently they are done with their first flush and starting to turn green. My question is when is the earliest I can tip them to make them branch? After the first flush hardens or should I was until after the second flush hardens, or should you wait even longer?

You wouldn't get shade during the cooler months as it drops almost all leaves...plus a wonderful mess on your soles, in spring time when it drops a gazillion berries to the ground, definitely not recommended for a driveway or a sitting area, just for a chicken's lunch area in my case.

Mulberry

I have one on the corner of my property, and it gets picked daily fairly high up. Do that and the mess is negligible, it's in the grass anyway.

Yeah it drops leaves but it's worth it for those can't buy in a store mulberries :-)

Interesting that all of you say your mulberry trees drop their leaves. Mine drops maybe 1/6 of its leaves, if that. It stays mainly green all year and I am in 10a. Also I have a shangri la so it is a big leaf variety, pretty tropical looking to me. More tropical looking than a mango or longan in my opinion.

Breakfast: Maha Chanok, Angie, Fruit Punch

Maha is an all time great.  This one had an interesting spiraling black patch and skin partly going off.  But inside is was perfect.  Firm.  Dense.  Good aroma and subtle flowery sweetness.  For those intimidated by sickly sweetness from the new fangled Zill releases, the classic Maha offers respite.  It was good i ate it first because....

Angie I ate firm as recommended by posters here.  Strikingly beautiful reddish orange speckled skin conceals yellow gold inside.  Stronger aroma than Maha, just as dense but much more flavor.  Is it top tier?  For a true snob, no.  But second tier is no insult.  I really enjoyed Angie and can see how it is being actively pitched as the north america Alphonso substitute.  On its own, eaten firm, you'd have no complaints.  But i followed it with...

Fruit Punch.  My, my, my.  We only scooped two this year and man were they good.  Spotted blackening skin covered immaculate yellowy orange fleshed.  Even denser than Angie.  Even more aromatic than Angie.  Even sweeter than Angie.  Definitely more complex flavor.  Had I eaten this first, well, yea... it closed out breakfast strong.  Its been a while since i had it in promised form and today was that day.

Fruit Punch, hands down, wins breakfast.  Yes, it delivered the knockout.

On the table we have Mun Khun See, Taralay, PPK, Philippine, E4 and Sweet Tart...

Didnt see your review on sweet tart in your post above where you covered Mun Khun See, ppk and E4. What were your thoughts on it? Grafting over a tree to sweet tart now.

Is it getting full sun?

Yeah it is in full sun. Maybe once the rains really start around here it will take off.

So I bought a 3 gallon ppk/lemon meringue mango tree sometime in Feb, I put it in the ground and it has yet to put on any new growth. The tree overall looks healthy but I am puzzled as to why the thing has not grown at all in the past 5 months or so. I have been giving it water since we have not been getting any but I also tried not watering it for a couple weeks to see if that would make it start growing, nothing happened. What do you guys think? All of my other mango trees are putting on new growth like crazy, they are however mature trees.

I am thinking about giving it until july/august and then it is getting replaced with another ppk.

I planted a healthy looking 3gl cogshall two years ago and it did not budge for a whole year, now it is growing like a wild fire. It is likely just getting established and putting all of it's energy into rooting, Next summer it should go nuts. Be careful not to over fertilize it. I have killed several you mango trees that way, Hard lesson to learn.

Yeah I only gave it a little bit since it is a young tree. I didnt even want to put any fertilizer on it at all but I was to the point where if it didnt start growing it was going to get replaced anyway.

LM is slow to start, especially if you don't give it nitrogen. My 5 year old tree stands a towering 7 - 8 feet tall. Meanwhile, my lemon zest of same age is twice as tall.

I did just give it some fertilizer a couple days ago, we will see if it helps any.

You have to be patient. They put out roots first before putting out new growth. Pruning will speed up the process, even cutting an inch off of the tips will do the trick.

I have thought about pruning it. But it is only a 3 gallon mango, it is probably only a foot tall... maybe a bit more.
