Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jackfruit - Golden Nugget vs Borneo Red
« on: August 29, 2020, 10:22:56 AM »
I’m axing my golden nugget this year along with black gold, orange crush, and sweet Fairchild. Keeping Bangkok Lemon, j31, j30, a j31/ns1 seedling. Waiting on amber, Tony Morris, red morning and Excalibur red to produce. I have one on the red morning tree so I’ll at least get to try it this season.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pura Vida Avocado in S. Florida
« on: August 02, 2020, 02:23:42 PM »
Anyone seen these around?  I read an article saying thry can get up to 3ft long.  They called it "pura vida" grown at a farm in Miami.  Other articles mentioned russel avocado but I think they are different?  If anyone knows where I can buy a few scions of pura vida let me know.

Black gold is a very ornamental tree. The most out of all my varieties. But I’m not a fan of the fruit. J31, J30, Bangkok Lemon all good. Sweet Fairchild is getting the chainsaw.  Still waiting for fruit on red morning, Excalibur red and, Tommy Morris red.

Decorate your tree with tinsel. Birds won’t go near it.

I bought mine from Going Bananas in Homestead. I’ve got a nice fat rack ready any day.

Vallenato is of pretty mediocre eating quality

My tree is being topworked after this season. It was mediocre at best.

There is also the Mango Madu or Indonesian honey mango that was sold by Fairchild at the mango festival a couple years ago. It’s supposed to have pockets of honey like nectar. Still waiting for mine to fruit.

Any pictures of a fruit?  What size is the fruit?

Early flowers allowed me to gather pollen and hand pollinate ate the same time. My 3 year old tree now has around 30 fruit set and growing. I did another round of hand pollination but did need to gather the pollen and store it for a day or two. I’ll know soon if it was successful.

I gathered the pollen in a plastic lid for a mason jar then put it in a ziplock bag and stored it in my wine fridge as my regular fridge is below 40 degrees and I don’t know if that’s too cold for the pollen.

Here’s the fruit from the initial set.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Right Choice? Cogshall
« on: January 01, 2019, 02:30:53 AM »
I have a Cogshall from Fairchild also. Planted 4 years ago. It’s growth pattern is very bushy and compact with little pruning. I haven’t had a problem with jelly seed. It’s productive and the fruit is good colorful and fiberless.

Since you’ve already planted it I would let it grow and fruit then you can decide. You may end up being happy with it. Otherwise you lose a full year starting over.

I doubt you could compete with Mexican jackfruit prices. If there was wholesale demand in the USA there would already be fields popping up.

Asia exports the processed (canned) jackfruit we consume in the USA.

I’ve talked to people from the jackfruit company who sell packaged barbecue jackfruit in stores and they source from Thailand.

I suspect the low price from other countries are a barrier to commercial fields here.

Rob is probably the one with the most tasting experience. I bought my Excalibur red there 2 or 3 years ago. No fruit yet but there were some male flowers. It was blown over in Irma last year and the roots haven’t fully re established so it may be another couple of years to get fruit from the tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: J-31 Jackfruit Fruits or Plant Needed
« on: September 30, 2018, 12:31:20 PM »
Mine are already harvested but it was my favorite jackfruit for me out of the varieties I’ve planted that fruited (sweet Fairchild, ns1/j31 seedling, and orange crush). I’m still wait on my amber, black and yellow golds, j30, Bangkok Lemon, red morning, and Excalibur red to fruit. But I don’t have any seeds till next year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting mangos of 2018
« on: July 09, 2018, 03:21:28 PM »
I had my first ever peach cobblers from my tree. All I can say is that it is named correctly as it had the strongest peach flavor I’ve ever had in a mango.

I brought some juicy peaches (and others) to Illinois with me and the people I shared them with were blown away by how good it was.  Their farm xperience is mostly Tommy’s from the supermarket. But I agree the JP was fantastic.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango identification (Rapoza???)
« on: July 08, 2018, 09:18:51 PM »
It doesn’t look like my Rapoza. Mine are a deep red color with little green and yours have almost an apple shape. Maybe one of the other experts can opine. Here are mine on the tree two months before harvest and a cut open ripe fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Harvest Moon mango questions
« on: July 08, 2018, 11:23:16 AM »
My 4 year old Harvest Moon produced 4 fruit this year. One was inedible due to some rot around the stem. Of the remaining 3 one was smaller in size and the other two were jumbo. One of the jumbos I picked too early and it never ripened properly.  You don’t pick these at the first sign of yellow. I picked this one full yellow on the tree and it still had to ripen off the tree for another week. I live in the north Redlands, well inland and the fruit remained quite clean of any fungus with no treatments.

I didn’t weigh it but I guess it was around 3 pounds. It’s pictured next to a Carrie for comparison. I can put down 4 Carrie size fruits for breakfast but it was a stretch to finish this Harvest Moon.

I would call the flavor very good but not great. Not much fiber, no internal breakdown. Uniform flavor and texture throughout. To large to cut up tic tac toe style. The novelty is the size.

My tree is not a vigorous grower like the peach cobbler by any means. It’s an average size tree but the stems grow very thick.
