flying dragon vs trifoliate orange
« on: September 16, 2019, 11:16:46 AM »
Someone sent me some seedlings. They aren't sure if they are flying dragon or generic trifoliate orange. At such an immature stage, is there an easy way to tell them apart? or identify one from the other?

Not an expert, but even the seedlings I've had of the Flying Dragon cultivar show a different pattern of growth, and I would think yours are not Flying Dragon.

Flying dragon has curved thorns & contorted growth habit. What you have is standard trifoliata.

Is the curved contorted growth apparent this young?

It looks like standard trifoliate. Might be some rootstock trifoliate hybrid, but most likely regular trifoliate.

What is it Millet? I have not seen any FD without curved thorns. Cross of something? I was speaking of the pic above this post, not the original posted pic. Im interested. Would love to cultivate something with curved thorns that are not on flying D.

Bomand,  Sorry I thought you were still talking about the picture of scamper's tree at the beginning of this thread.

I heard a presentation years ago (Perhaps at the International Citrus Congress in Sun City South Africa, 1996???), about Flying Dragon from seed.  They said that while it was highly nucellar, there was a lot of variation among seedlings.  As I recall, they said that there was a nice correlation between the degree of thorn curving and the amount of dwarfing you could get as a rootstock.  So they recommended selecting in favor of the most curved thorns, if strong dwarfing was the desired characteristic in the rootstock.

I was not referring to the image immediately above my post. Sorry if that was not made more clear.

Very interesting,  even exciting, "the more the thorn curves the greater the dwarfing of the tree.  Thanks that is great information.
