Saguaro cactus

Cuttings:
Pads of delicious prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) cacti

I have been looking for cuttings of this rare natural Hawaiian hybrid for some time now but all I could find previously were seeds. Now I managed to obtain a rooted cutting from a reputable dealer. This is a small fruiting hybrid that bears bright pink fleshed fruits with a reddish-orange rind. Its BRIX rating is reported to be 21. I'm very excited to grow this and I'll post about it once it fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Today was a big day
« on: January 12, 2017, 09:40:56 PM »
A lot of plants and seeds simultaneously showed up today so I have lots to post about.
I received my ridiculously inexpensive order of 4 soursop plants, 2 two year old Inga edulis plants, 4 Spanish lime plants, 4 hass avocado plants (not in the best shape) and 2 carambola plants (one is especially healthy even after haphazard shipping job.) Here's a picture of the plants being temporarily shower in my closet for rehydration.

I got 1 G macrophylla seed, 1 G intermedia seed, 3 sapodilla seeds, 4 biriba seeds, 6 A squamosa seeds and around 25 white roselle seeds from trade winds.
I didn't take pictures of every seed but I'm pretty sure this G macrophylla germinated in transit.

Also got some free hybrid red Jaboticaba from Jabomano. Thanks for the seeds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Smaller fruit trees
« on: January 11, 2017, 09:41:52 PM »
My greenhouse that is being constructed is probably about 8 feet tall or taller. I'm wondering which smaller fruit trees I can grow that I won't inevitably have to bring to the Conservatory of Flowers when I work there as a volunteer. I already know a few but would like to hear more suggestions.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Seeking: cuttings of wax jambu
« on: January 09, 2017, 12:51:29 AM »
Willing to trade, buy or pay postage for to wax jambu cuttings. Would like rooted cuttings or a decent amount of unroofed cuttings. Rooting cuttings seems to have a somewhat low success rate so it's more of an experiment than anything. I'll post a detailed report on the forum if successful.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wax jambu cutting
« on: January 08, 2017, 09:38:04 PM »
I read an article that claimed one can easily root wax jambu cuttings. It even showed pictures. Is this true? If so I may have found a way to grow wax jambu at a low cost.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Seeking seeds
« on: January 05, 2017, 11:30:08 PM »
I'm a big growing from seed person with all the different types of plants I collect. I think it comes from raising beetle larva, but I have the patience to do it. My greenhouse is currently being built and I received a seed starting tray as a gift and I would like to purchase many kinds of tropical fruit seeds at low prices. I have a list, but if you like a certain fruit and have seeds, feel free to offer them.

My list so far is:
Eugenia neonitidia - starcherry
Eugenia involucrata - cherry of the rio grande
Cinnamomum Zeylanicum - Ceylon cinnamon
Theobroma bicolor, grandiflorum and augustifolia - white cacao, capucu, etc.
Annonas besides squamosa
Garcinia sp. specifically intermedia, humilis (achacha), Mexican mangosteen and most of all mangostana
Salacca zalacca
Inga sp.
Abiu
Myrciara cauliflora
Longan
Ramubtan
Wax jambu
Starfruit
Mangifera torquenda
Duguetia sp.
Black Eugenia uniflora
Herrania sp.
Litsea garciae
Mammea americana
Parmentiera aculeata/cereifera
Guarana
Others I may think of. Also seeking sweet Hylocereus and Selenicereus megalanthus cuttings.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Questions about germination
« on: January 05, 2017, 08:09:49 PM »
I was wondering if there are any special things I need to do to germinate the following seeds.

Rollinia deliciosa and Annona squamosa I assume have regular germination requirements

Same for Hibiscus sabdariffa

For Theobroma bicolor and cacao, my friend gave me directions but I'd be interesting in hearing others.

No idea for:

Lemon drop mangosteen

Garcinia macrophylla

Sapodilla

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cold hardy mangoes
« on: January 04, 2017, 07:48:49 PM »
I'm wondering what mangoes will grow outdoors in zone 9b. For younger trees, I can always take them in the greenhouse and for larger trees in containers I can bring them indoors, but if I establish one in the ground, I don't want to rely on using frost cloth, although frosts are rare and brief. Regardless, it would be easier to buy a zone 9 hardy cultivar I won't have to stress about.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Interesting fruit in SoCal
« on: December 29, 2016, 05:42:35 PM »
I'm on a trip to a very warm part of SoCal near the Palos Verdes area and I found this fruit growing as a hedge. I'm not sure its other uses, but here is a picture of the fruit, plant, flower and the milky latex (sap) at the top of the fruit when detached. Anyone know what it is?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / For trade/sale: Strawberry tree seeds
« on: December 16, 2016, 10:15:58 PM »
I have Arbutus unedo seeds from local bushes and trees. Looking to trade but will accept payment.
Here is the ripe fruit:

Here is one of the large trees (as opposed to small bushes) that this fruit is from

Here are some seeds from the pictured fruit:

I can pick more as I believe there are more ripe fruit at the moment and there are certainly many unripe fruits developing. It can be trained to be a small tree or shrub and is a fast growing plant.
