Tipping mango tree -_- flowering.
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:16:16 PM »
Hello everyone, Long time reader first time writing,
I have really appreciated the information and knowledge received on this Web page. Thank you all for the info provided.
I have a coconut cream Mango tree that I planted November 2014, its been growing like crazy, two months ago I decided to Tip the tree so it can start growing more branches and make it will make it easier to keep the size I want.
So instead of growing multiple branches it started  to grow multiple flower branches (they are half branch half flower) I have never seen this before. Is this normal?

I have attached some photos so you can see what I’m talking about

Great looking tree.
The flowering is normal this time of year. You will want to make sure and tip after fruit harvest so that you get some growth before the flowering period of the year.

I would not let it hold fruit (and based on its age/size, I don't think it will).  I would tip prune it in a month or so and then keep on that regimen through September.

Thank you, I just found it so awkward seeing the flowering below the leaves, I always see the leaves first then the bud on top where the flower comes out not the other way around  ???

From my experience you get combination of just flowers on some branches, and some with both leaves and flowers, in no real particular arrangement. it seems quite random from branch to branch.

The same thing happened to mine, if you don't want to let it hold fruit then you need to wait until small pea size fruit have formed then remove them otherwise if you just cut them now it may simply flower again.

What is the true long term effect of letting a young grafted tree under 2 years old try to bloom fruit?  Less fruit the following years? Weak tree?

Normal.

I generally just let my trees do their own thing. They will almost always abort the fruit that they are incapable of holding.

The benefit is more tree growth over putting its energy into holding fruit. Skipping a year and allowing the tree to grow larger increases ovrall yield and appearance of the tree.

So if my final goal is to try and keep them as small as possible, I should let them fruit then?

Not really...better to let the tree develop naturally and keep smaller by pruning.  Letting it hold fruit when too young will slow down the tree's development it needs.
