Citrus General Discussion / A mistake......
« on: July 17, 2016, 07:56:38 PM »
A mistake turn into a real surprise when i fertilize my citrus tree,s with Espoma Holly tone.
I have been using Jack's Hp fertilizer for a long time now but the seems to be stagnant I have a bag of this Espoma laying around, bought last year so i use it on all my tree's,figs, citrus, some tropicals you name it. To my surprise they all show new growth, like in few days.
Went to their website to see what this stuff is for, acidic ofcourse, but the figs loves this stuff too,go vigor. According to their advise it is a longer term fert..

Citrus General Discussion / choice winterizing my citrus?
« on: October 19, 2015, 08:21:36 PM »
Last winter when i brought my plants in,they were in my shop. Temps were 72* 24/7 with shoplights for 9 hrs. They all stay healthy and some flowered but all flowers fell-off. Come spring took them outside they grew but no more flowers.
The year before left all the tree,s in my unheated garage where it never got below 38* degrees they lost all their leaves but bloomed in the spring and i got fruit.
SHould i leave them in the garage or find a better way in the shop with more lights and lower temps?

Citrus General Discussion / fertilizer difference?
« on: July 24, 2015, 12:56:09 PM »
In the citrus world fertilizer can be grouped in two or three sections of growers. One like Foilage Pro 9-3-6 and others like Peters 25-5-15, and i do not know in actual application. It seams that peters is a tad better. Meyer lemon need more?.I now have about 20 tree's in containers so i have to get serious about the right amounds Since i bought a 25 lbs of peters i have to stay with it for a while.
I mix my fert. in 7 gls containers,is 6 level tbl's too much?

I grew some flying dragon seedlings last year in 8" and 10" pots and left them outside during the fall end winter months, forgot to bring them in for the winter. Winter lows were around 7 to 10 degrees and mostly were around teens and low twenties. On top of that they were above ground on a worktable. The real small ones did not made it. Mind you they were not watered or cared for,now mind you, that is what i call superhardy rootstock.

Citrus General Discussion / Peters fertilizer?
« on: May 03, 2015, 09:15:29 PM »
I bought a 25 lb bag of their high performance fert, it is a soluble type. I would like to know, how to use it.Do you use it as a foliar spray or just mix it with water and just feed it to the soil? I do not want to overfertilize my tree's. How often do you use it?.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mr.Minh atemoya?
« on: September 11, 2014, 09:37:08 PM »
Mr.Minh is not as popular as some and not much is written about it. I am just wondering how it stack-up againts the others.I got my tree from Adam this spring and is doing very decent for a newb in Arkansas, but it need a companion and i think it is going to be a Lisa.

The mother tree was a bushy container tree about 11 years old now. The central leader spyked out and is 6 feet tall and i like to obtain a Dekopan sion for a bud graft, which is probable hard to find.Harris might sell this variety but on the wrong rootstock, than i have to graft later to F.D.

Citrus General Discussion / Are Americans bored with citrus?
« on: July 28, 2014, 08:39:11 PM »
I hope not,I think citrus should be grown more than any other fruit. I don't have a lot of experience in this field but might crank it up a little help for seasoned expert on this forum. Millet should get a better following.

Trying to expand with (sub) tropicals is a chore, starting with soils, fertilizers(never ending subject), ease of growing. I started with citrus( kept them alive for years).
Now i have a M.Minh atamoya and a Red Jabo all from Adam. These tree's are growing rather slow,is this normal? It has to be me!!!. Is it to late for a new flusch?

Citrus General Discussion / Don't do what i did.!!!!
« on: July 12, 2014, 02:13:54 PM »
I got a Page manderin tree that is about 7 or 8 years old and always got about around 3 dozen fruits a year. This year nada, why? I brought my tree in last fall too soon and it went into bloom in the first part of Januari. My workshop stays around 72*, no polinators, all bloom fell-off. Lights around the tree for about 12 hours.
This fall i will put the tree in the garage first for 2 months then in the shop maybe this will work, that way it might bloom around the time that it go outside again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / champange mango seed's
« on: June 01, 2014, 12:43:39 PM »
I live in the Ozarks,Arkansas and in the middle of the Ozarks forest is a Sam's Club with tons of champange mango's. I bought 6 boxes at $8.00 each.I planted a dozen seed's and they are coming up already. Question:  Is it worth growing in containers, are the tree's going to be big i mean big?Btw, they were pretty good for a store gought mango.
If this is not enough yesterday i went to Walmart yesterday and found several citrus tree's there, nice healthy tree's at $20.00. Red navel, Meyer, calamondin and a couple orange tree's.

I got a Mr minh atemoya from Adam yestersay as a start and had several citrus tree's from Harris citrus nursery delivered today. This company is one heck of a buisines and great people. I envy all you members living in zone 10 and grow them all without worries about weather. i always would like to move but i could not abandent what i am growing here in Arkansas and that is where the challence start.
I have read most posts but still confused, i keep on reading. My winter holding room is my old studio: 29'x16'x12'high. heat 70 degrees.
My tropical plants and citrus tree's are healthy looking and are outside now.I am looking for a few fruitree's that are easy to grow.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Where in Florida?
« on: October 26, 2012, 11:47:10 AM »
Where in Florida would you be safe to grow tropicals fruits?

1: safe from winters(reasonable).
2: soil(moisture content).
3: East or west side.
Is there such thing as higher grounds,I prefer the west side north of Naples and south of Fort Meyers.
Growing near the Gulf better than more inland?
I am planning a serious fact finding trip within the next 2 months and appreciate any help from you.
