I don't like this defeatist attitude, you can always make more room

but to answer the question:

1. m-4 mango: best coconut mango
2. sugar loaf: pineapple/coconut mango
3. sweet tart: complex flavor
4. orange sherbert: just to see how it does in my yard
5. coconut cream: cool looking tree and coconut cream flavor
6. Kathy: just to see how it does in my yard

Coconut cream can taste bad over ripe

Dropped cc substantialy in my rating

So replace it with Ciotton Candy and call it a day

So M-4 is better than Coconut Cream, and Sugarloaf is better than Piņa Colada?  Does everyone agree, or are there some dissenters?  (And why doesn't M-4 have a name yet?)

I don't think enough is known about M4 yet to say it is better than CC. If it is, then will need one, as every CC I've had has been amazing and delightful.

Gotcha.  Maybe the same with Sugarloaf and PC?

Coconut Cream is by far the best mango I've ever eaten. Everything about the mango itself is amazing. I have found the trees to be shy bearer's thus far, but if that doesn't change, it can be remedied by planting more of them :)

Have to agree, wouldn't say the best, but it is a damn good mango and we savor every single one our tree produces. It is my wifes favorite though. In my top 3 or 4 for sure. We also have PPK for our citrusy flavored mango, Fairchild for small personal snack size mango, pickering for our powerhouse producer share with friends mango, and honey kiss for our late season. Running out of room so torn between planting 1 or 2 more low vigor trees, or grafting onto PPK or Fairchild to make a multi variety tree of 2 or 3 varities.

Also have to add: Lemon Zest is top 3 for me. Amazing flavor, texture, and good size. Too bad it has issues with disease. Still plan on grafting some LZ because it is just that good.

I've only tried 60 or so varieties of mango (so not nearly as many as others on here), but here's what I'd do:

Coconut cream: My favorite mango. My tree is quite productive as well
Lemon Zest: I like the flavor more than OS, and my area doesn't seem to be affected by the bacterial spot yet
Cotton Candy: I currently grow this tree but haven't tasted it yet. I love "Cotton Candy" flavored fruit though (Muntinga and Cotton Candy grapes), so if it lives up to it's name it's a keeper
Bailey's Marvel: My favorite "mango-flavored" mango
Mangifera lalijiwa: Very sweet and gives some variety by being non-indica.
Pickering: Good flavor, compact tree, and a little earlier than other varieties

I love mango but if I have to grow it, I will pick only my few favourite ones as follows:

1. Rhinomango => Many people love eating when unripe, but I do love eating it when it is going to ripe. It is sweet and sour at the same time. I planted a grafted one, got 3 fruits in the 2nd year.

2. Mamaungbao : It is local mango of southern part of Thailand which has same size as chicken egg. This raw mango has sour taste, crispy meat and natural smell so it is often mixed in many recipe; pounded mango as namprik or pickled mango. I planted one grafted tree and it produced tons of fruits in the 3rd year.

3. Barracuda mango (Nam Dok Mai): I love its sweet taste.  They can be identified by the uniquely pale yellow skin and long slender candlelight shape.  I love eating it when fully ripen and best consumed with sweentened sticky rice, thicken coconut milk and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.  It is one of the most popular deserts in Thailand.

These only 3 varieties are enough for me, cannot find any more other varieties which I love so much so I want to grow them.

1. Rosigold - earliest mango I have - decent flavor, good disease resistance and productive.
2. pickering - great little tree, earlier season, coconut flavor
3. LZ - love the fruit, haven't had too many issues with disease. Just make sure you spray the blooms with sulfur.
4. Sweet tart - Great flavor and productivity
5. Carrie - just one of my favorites flavorwise, always a healthy tree. sometimes good crops and sometimes small crops, but have 3 sources from my yard.
6. Honeykiss(productivity), M4(good coconut flavor) or Keitt(good size and very late) for late season mango.

PPK (awesome citrus taste)
Coconut Cream (awesome coconut taste)
Pim Seng Mun (the ones from a tasting a couple years ago were some of the best mangos I've ever eaten)
Pickering (as noted, a workhorse)

I've never tried dwarf hawaiian, but I like the Rosigold flavor. Clean flavor with some sub acid and good texture, sometimes I detect hints of vanilla.

Happy 4th.

So if you could only have 5-6 mango trees?.

You would be sad and wish you could have more
and if you have more you will wonder what to do with the fruits
and if you wonder what you do with them, you will consider a desiccator and a blender
If you get a blender you will make shakes
If you get a desiccator you will make dried mango chips
If you like your shakes and your chips you will want more
If you want more you will want even more mango trees
and if .....

I have tasted both and DH is a clear winner for me. I have a tree in my yard as well. Smaller mango, but full of flavor. The tree stays small as well.

Carrie is a great flavor of mango, spicy, rich, creamy and sweet.

After a lot of tasting & research these are the 7 trees I chose to plant (plus a mislabeled Valencia Pride I was sent by mistake).  With trees you also have to consider seasons, reliability & not just the flavor of the fruit.  You want to make sure you have a EARLY, MID & LATE SEASON varieties.  In fact if you were only going to have 3 trees I would make spreading the season my top priority for selection.  For myself Glenn, Carrie & Lancetilla would be my choices for spreading the season.

1. Carrie -  #1 Best selling Mango in South Florida for a good reason.  It's the epitome of a rich sweet indulgent decadent desert mango.  Best mid season choice.
2. Glenn - The best early.  Reliable & excellent refreshing cantaloupe like flavor when fully ripe.  It's my favorite "breakfast" mango.
3. Lemon Meringue/PPK - It's a must have.  Tart Lemon flavor when slightly under ripe.  Sweet Orange flavor when fully ripe.
4. Edward - Shy bearer, but still #1 for flavor with a lot of Florida old timers.  Creamy & extremely WELL BALANCED flavor.
5. Lancetilla - YES LANCETILLA!!!  Excellent flavor when allowed to fully ripen which takes longer due to their size.  The 5 stars rating for flavor on the Pine Island Web Site is spot on.  It's size isn't a factor.  Good late season choice.
6. Mallika - No Camel Dung or special ripening required IME.  Full flavored Mango - not for sissies.  Like a Carrie on steroids.  It will punch you in the face the first time you try it.  The flavor will quickly grow on you even if you aren't sure about it at first.  Keep trying it till you love it.
7. Keitt - Only because it's the latest, prolific & reliable.  Good flavor, but wouldn't win any contests for flavor alone.

THUMBS DOWN

1. Nam Dok Mai - One note mango - over rated.  Blandly sweet but no mango flavor.
2. Maha Chanok - Tastes like a carrot - over rated. It's pretty & photogenic but that's all.
3. Angie - Tastes like pureed over cooked carrots with a dash of old sneaker - just plain nasty.  It's a spitter.

Blessed be the man who plants a tree knowing he will never live to enjoy it's fruit or shade.

I'd plant Jehangir, Neelam, Zill Indochinese, Shwe Hin Tha, Mulgoba, Lemon Zest and Banganapalli.  Then I'd totally cheat and graft at least 3 more varieties on each.  Variety is good :-)

Best regards,
Scott
