Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya question
« on: October 04, 2018, 02:47:36 PM »
I have heard some interesting discussions on which rootstock to graft atemoya.
I have never heard anyone mention grafting atemoya on another atemoya seedling?
I wonder if anyone has tried it?
I was told that an atemoya will only live about 10-12 years on sugar apple rootstock?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / air layer fertilizer
« on: August 14, 2018, 09:31:01 PM »
I have been trying to air layer a couple trees this summer. Today I checked
my two longan air layers and one of them had a nice root ball going. I cut it and
put it in a pot. I was wondering if I should fertilize it to help the roots fill out?
It's sitting in a shady area and I really want it to take. I found this tree in an
abandoned yard and it took me a month to figure out who owned it and get permission
to airlayer it. The guy who owns the property doesn't know what type it is, he
actually told me it was a lychee. He never waters or fertlizes it and it had the
biggest sweetest longans I have ever seen. He said it fruits every year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba fertilizer
« on: July 21, 2018, 11:37:33 PM »
I was wondering what people use for fertilizer for Jaboticaba seedlings.
I currently have two different types and both have quit growing and the new leaves are
coming out yellow and not greening up. I am using only rainwater which is suppose to be 7 ph, is this an issue?
I just bought some 365 day slow release 13-5-11 nutricote and wanted to check with the forum before I
apply it. Both of these are trees I can't readily get seeds for and I really want them to thrive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / sulpher application
« on: January 09, 2018, 11:38:28 AM »
I recently read several articles that state pine needles and oak leaves actually don't lower the ph of soil?
OK so back to sulpher. How much do you add per tree and how often? I was told a handful every 6 months
but I was hoping to hear from others on their experience. I plan to add only to trees in the ground.

Thanks for feedback

Tropical Fruit Discussion / I feel like bragging a little
« on: May 26, 2017, 04:36:35 PM »
My 6th grade son last night had his awards ceremony. First he got Straight A's ( he's never had a B ) Each teacher picked their
overall favorite 2 kids in their classes. He was picked for Math and History and then finally they had 10 runner ups for best
overall 6th grader 5 girls and 5 boys. Then only 2 boys and 2 girls got picked as best overall kids in the 6th grade.
He was one of the 2 boys picked,

Today I noticed my Sabara had 5 small fruit on it and 1 was ripe. I saw a few first flowers low on the trunk but the fruit is higher
in the branches. I planted the thing over 6 years ago. Man is it me or is fruit you grow personally taste better?
That first fruit was so wonderful!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Na Dai sugar apple size?
« on: March 17, 2017, 01:29:37 PM »
I have a small area on the South side of my house I was going to plant Na Dai sugar apple trees. Exactly how big will these trees get?
I have 4 trees that are one year old from plugs that are already 7-8' tall. My area is  6' x 17'. My question is could I hedge them and plant a tree every 5' and plant 3 trees or should I plant 2 trees? If anyone has a decent picture of an adult tree I would appreciate seeing the actual
adult tree?
THANKS

Citrus General Discussion / sugarbelle
« on: November 11, 2015, 12:32:16 AM »
I tried my first sugarbelle yesterday and another one today! I ate a ponkan first then the sugarbelle. This year we haven't cooled down much and the oranges are late. I really like the sugarbelle and I taste the grapefruit. It has a real good tangy flavor. My son ate both also and prefered the sugarbelle over the ponkan. It does have seeds. Luckily I have about 30 more to eat. My new routine in the morning is to walk 2 miles and then go in my yard and eat oranges for breakfast!

Citrus General Discussion / clementines in Florida
« on: October 07, 2015, 05:08:20 PM »
Has anyone had good or bad luck growing clementines in Florida?
I have 2 trees and my mom has 1 tree and her tree isn't thriving so far. I purchased one at Lowes for her and also one for myself but they are definitely different types. I was reading the other day and there was a statement made that clementines do poorly in Florida. I have also heard it from a citrus grower out of Sebring? I have a Nules which I got from Rasnicks out of Winterhaven and I have the unidentified one from Lowes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Home Depot
« on: September 15, 2015, 12:08:37 AM »
I went to Home Depot in Ft Myers, Florida the other day and guess what I found. Six Pitombas for sale in 3 gallons for $36.98. Not bad looking trees. I couldn't resist and went back a week later and bought one. They still had the same six trees. They had some real nice 15 gallon and up citrus and even a macadamia tree in a 15gal. By far the best looking and best selection of fruit trees I've seen at a home Depot. Their prices are a bit higher then I remembered but I never expected to see pitombas!
