Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trying to fruit Theobroma grandiflorum
« on: March 29, 2018, 05:05:59 AM »
Hi All

I have 2 x Theobroma grandiflorum, both probably 5-6 metres high....planted probably 1 metre apart from each other.  The tree flower constantly when in season, but I have never once received a fruit.  Some people tell me 1 tree is enough and have seen them fruit with no other species around, and then some say you need 2 trees.  I must state however these 2 trees were originally marcotts so may actually be marcotts from the same tree originally.

Can someone give some advice....the trees are in partial light / shade...but due to their height should get sufficient light.

Also I have Theobroma bicolor....they are probably 3 to 4 metres high...how long till they flower, any ideas?

Theobroma gileri is very slow growing but flowers constantly also.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Heat straticfication

I had a pot of Chiranthodendron pentadactylon seeds which I gave up on.  So I decided to sterilize the pot and the same medium without removing the said seeds.  I sterilized with boiling water for 5 minutes the medium. Then cooled and planted out some new seeds in the medium. The medium was originally fresh so didn't want to waste it.  Now you would think that boiling hot water would kill anything including any viable embryo in said seeds but heavens behold within 5 days the Chiranthodendron pentadactylon all started to germinate that were left in the pot.

It seems the boiling water did the trick and amazingly never killed the seeds.

I have now tried the same technique on some other hard to germinate species to see if this will break the dormancy along with sitting the seeds in smokey water to mimic a bush fire.

Lets see the out comes.

Hi All

Ex  Zimbabwe the hard to get dwarf Annona stenophylla is in season, collected fresh today.  USD$3 per seed, as the seeds are small we can get away with seeds in a card or letter for USD$ 9.00 registered anywhere in the world with Zimpost from Zimbabwe.

Very fleshy orange pulp with a sweet flavour.  Also ideal for pot growing due to its dwarf size.

PM for order.

Note it is also in the discussions area which was a mistake as I was half a sleep when posting, but have advised the administrator...sorry all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting onto cold hardy Annonas
« on: December 11, 2017, 07:55:09 AM »
Quick question.   Annona cherimola, atemoya and some ornamental Annonas are more cold hardier.

My question is this, if I graft a Annona diversifolia, reticulata or others onto a cold hardy species will it then make the tropical species grafts cold hardy also?

The sap and or brix would be being delivered to the graft from the cold hardy root stock correct?

Could this work or be done?
