Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: canistel ripe?
« on: November 14, 2021, 07:43:15 PM »
They won’t get soft on the tree. If they do then they’ll fall apart on the ground. You can probably pick them at this point and let them ripen until soft.
Lots of fun!
Peter
thanks!

Are these canistel ready to pick? These are my first fruits and they are still hard

The best indicator is how your trees are doing?

629
Are your trees in the ground or in pots?
I water mine with well water that is 6.3 and mostly rain water that
is 7. Soil PH is also important. If the PH is too high the trees tend to get
chlorotic. How are your trees doing?

How often do you water your glenn?

I found extra water really got my young mangos pushing new growth

I would be more interested in the new growth after it pushes

I wouldn't worry about the tree. There is nothing you can do about
the old leaves. I use Diamond R  8-4-8 granular with micros and spray southern
ag citrus foliar spray a couple times a year. Also I water heavy in the Summer
if it doesn't rain. My small trees are very dark green and flushing constantly.
When the trees start to fruit I quit the granular fertilizer and only use the
spray. Get the tree on a good regimen and watch it take off

I have a couple sabara in the ground also.
What I noticed with all my jabos is that as they get bigger and older
they flower and set fruit more and more. One of my sabaras is fruiting
several times a year now and so far all the fruit have one very small seed.
This is the third year I have gotten fruit and it fruited 3-4 times so far
this year. My other tree flowered in the middle of rainy season for the first
time and none of the fruit set. Be patient

How big of a tree is your Glenn?
It may be getting ready to push flowers?
Usually cooler weather is important but less water and
daylight hours also influence flowering. Several of my smaller
trees are still pushing new growth now. I hope it hardens before
any cold weather.

Leaves look like my Luc's?

Some of my jabos have multi trunks and I would leave them alone? You don't
have to seperate them.

I had a pickering a few years back that had leaves that were more curled then
that. I use the Southern Ag citrus foliar spray and 8-4-8 Diamond R granular and the tree
grew out of the issue and fruited heavy last year. Now I am only using the Southern Ag
Spray a couple times a year.

The fruit definitely comes in bunches twice a year on my tree.
If I wait until my fruit turns dark orange it is very sweet. I prefer it
a little green with a little acid with the sweetness. One way to store the fruit
is to dehydrate it. It makes a very chewy treat.

It's nice you have plenty of seeds so you can try a few now and save some for the
Spring. I do better when I start the seeds in the Spring. The new seedlings have a green
flimsy trunk and will dampen off if watered too much. They also go dormant when the daylight
is short. Store the seeds dry in a baggie at room temperature and they remain viable for years.
Also floating seeds sometimes will germinate. It's better to squeeze the seeds between your fingers and if
they collapse they are not viable. I like to germinate the seeds between damp paper towels
in baggies. When they germinate I plant in potting mix and even in the Spring water sparingly.
Here's a picture of 2 custard apple and a Isan Indigo I planted last June. They were from the
previous years seeds. They have nice woody trunks now and will do fine this Winter. I will leave them
outside unless it gets below 40F and water maybe once a month while they are dormant. The Isan's
leaves are turning yellow this late in the season but will flush new leaves next Spring

You might look over top tropicals availability list and narrow down
what it could be. I still think it could be NDM and it is a more common
mango that makes sense would be easy to substitute? How does it taste?
Is the tree in full sun?

Hi Kevin
Do you have fruiting sweet Uvaia trees?
I assume the original seeds came from Marcos?
How does it compare to pitangatuba fruit
Your selection of trees is impressive

A couple years ago I was buying a few trees from a guy on this forum and
I came across a 6" seedling labelled Guaya. Talk about being in the right place
at the right time. I think I paid $5 for it.  I planted it this past Summer and
hoping it can survive the Winters? It has very delicate leaves and the Sri Lankan
Weevils were killing the new growth, Luckily I sprayed it before this new flush

I agree with Brad and I would cut it now. I had a single trunk cherilata that
grew about 5 feet before it naturally branched. It was so top heavy with 5 branches
going upwards and it couldn't stand with out a stake. I pruned/pugged it last October
Annonas respond well to pruning

I would plant it.  Usually the fruit improves dramatically the second year in
taste and productivity. It reminds me of Big Eye pictures I have seen
which is suppose to hold large fruit at a small size and may have some atemoya
crossed in? It will be fun to see what the tree produces when it gets big.

it's common to get multiple shoots from a jaboticaba seed and I would leave it.
