skhan yard update 2019
« on: January 18, 2016, 01:53:26 PM »
Hello everyone,
I've been trying to document the growth of the trees I planted around the yard. The plan is to take photos of each tree every January.
Hopefully others can benefit from seeing the growth rate of the trees. At least how they grow in my yard.

So far i have 2015 and now 2016. I'll try to update the post every year.

Mango - Valencia Pride

Mango - Nam Doc Mai

Ice Cream Bean

I cut it back summer 2015 because the wind was blowing it over.

Starapple - Purple

Mango - Keitt

Malay Apple 1

Malay Apple 2

Mango - Glenn

Mango - Carrie

Mango - Lancetilla

Lemon - Meyer

Mango - Neelam

Was throwing all my kitchen scraps underneath for the good part of a year and had my potted plants nearby so it was constantly getting watered.

Guava - Thai

Mango - Fairchild

It started dropping leaves late 2014 i think because of a lack of water, slowly bouncing back.

Mango - Rosigold

Atemoya - Gefner 1 (Formally Lisa)

Atemoya - Gefner 2

Soursop

Abiu

Seemed like it suffered from drought stress in late 2014 like the Fairchild Mango, very slow to come back

Jackfruit - J31

Jackfruit - Golden Pillow

I have a few more plants and will post here whenever i have another picture to compare it to.

That is common for a Valencia Pride in Florida.   50 - 75 feet is common for a VP.  One can try and control its height but i wish them luck.

I figured the VP would something like that but to see it first hand is a different story. What really shocked me was the Neelam had similar growth rate,
I'll post the pics tomorrow or later on today.

I know I'm being a little impatient here but does anyone have an idea of when this starapple caimito, is going to fruit?
Planted it from a 3 gal half way through 2014 from a reputable nursery in Davie.

Just checked out your flickr and that is my kind of backyard!

Are those weights that are hanging on the carambola branches?

Using the most of my space.
I'm using some rocks because the Carambola was reaching for the stars even after i tipped it. I thought I could try to bend the branches horizontally or almost horizontally instead of removing them all together.
We'll see if it can stay down permanently once it hardens.

You could run them on a wire like they do at fairchild.  carambola works well espaliered horizontally.

Amazing.

How big is your lot for you to plant so many while not seeming overly crowded?

Its like a 1/5th of an acre. But I'm on a canal so i have some free airspace and don't have any big trees in the adjacent houses.

I planted most of them knowing that i will have to keep sizes in check via pruning.

I saw some pics of people around the forum doing that but seemed like a lot of work. As you can see from the 2016 pics,
I really been neglecting my yard. No tree circle and weeds everywhere. I'll get to it eventually.

I definitely think its possibly to produce enough food for a family on a lot like this though. If "livestock" wasn't prohibited i would have a great permaculture system going on.

i agree. i get about %10 to %35 of my food from my yard
depending on season. i could increase that very easily.
(lots of my fruit trees are too small to fruit)
Jaboticaba and Jujube are just starting to give me fruit.
in a year or 2 i will have starfruit, muscadines, mango, banana
in 4 years, i will have a LOT more - too much to remember and mention.

i eat a lot of papaya and guava when in season.
gynura, moringa, peppers, onion, malbar spinach etc... ,
for salads and adding to dishes,

i just planted some purple potato. i eat a lot of potatoes...
but i dont know how sustainable they are if i am consuming them
along the way ?

you dont need animals for a good permaculture system.
comfrey, nettle, and yarrow make great mulch and compost.
i have worms that help immensely as well.
chop+Drop and nitrogen fixers... is all you need...

Yeh, i know its not necessary but i would like the chickens to eat the bugs and for me to eat the chickens, lol

I'm currently doing the chop and drop technique with the pigeon pea, it grew to a 15ft tree in under a year, crazy. I'm not sure how well comfrey grows this for south.

Trying to put all my perennial veggies under the trees too.

I got comfrey cuttings in August, and they are doing great thus far, but haven't gone through rainy season (though it has been quite wet) to give a full report.

What perennial veggies are you growing?
