Are cherimoyas self fertile?
« on: February 20, 2019, 05:16:37 PM »
I have heard mixed things - some videos I have watched of hand pollination uses the same tree - but I have heard from someone that I need two trees in order to get fruit to set. I've also seen people online describing cultivars as "self fertile", implying that there are non self fertile cultivars. Are cherimoyas self fertile? If not, what cultivars are/are not?

I cant speak on behalf of every variety, but my Chaffey cherimoya tree produced a good crop of fruit by hand pollinating its flowers with its own pollen.

Cherimoya flowers are both male and female. The flower opens slightly when in the female stage and wider in the male stage. One tree is all it takes but having more trees would help in pollination I would assume.
