« on: March 22, 2019, 07:22:13 PM »
I've had no luck finding Ugni molinae (Chilean Guava/Strawberry Myrtle) online or in stores. If you have one or more (any size) you're willing to part with, please reply or contact me.  Thanks!

Annie's Annuals has them too, small plants in 4" pots, but the price is right and they grow fast.

Quick recommendation.  If you go over 100 a lot, bring them inside before it hits the high 90's.

Agreed.  And in SoCal they like afternoon shade.

They seem to do fine without afternoon shade in coastal areas in SoCal (or at least in my coastal area).

Ah, yeah -- I should have said if you're in a coastal area of SoCal, probably within 3 miles of the coast, then they should be fine.  But they should have afternoon shade in a spot that gets sunny with temperatures above 85 on a regular basis.

They like shade, lots of water and acidic soil.Verry easy to propagate plants by layering.

Does this taste much different from the Psidium cattleianum, also known as strawberry guava? Which one would you say tastes better?

It's completely different.  Not even a tiny bit similar.  It is unlike any other fruit I've had, and very tasty.  I just wish I could get this species to make more fruit!

I'm growing U. myricoides, hoping it can handle the heat better than U. molinae (though I haven't tried molinae yet). So far, my seedlings are slow growing, but that might be because I haven't separated them from the cluster yet. Got my seeds at Trade Winds. I tried them a few years back and lost the seedlings to sun and drought. I'm keeping them well watered and in the shade now, with a touch of afternoon sun.

Anyone have an U Molinae from the large fruiting variety? I love this fruit, it tastes like no other but the fruit are so small. It tastes a bit like cotton candy mixed with this other unreal tropical fruit flavor. I’ve seen a giant variety but it seems it’s only available in Europe.

A question to those of you who recommend bringing the plants inside if it will approach or go over 100F--is this necessary even if they are in shade all afternoon?

Thanks! I've been keeping these alive since November and don't want them to croak the first time it hits 98F in the next month...

I was given a plant of an unnamed supposedly large-fruited variety but it's been in a container for years and hasn't fruited yet.  I was hoping to get the "ka pow" variety that was selected in England but couldn't figure out how to purchase it.

One Green World up in Portland here has them.  They sell and ship as well.  I bought mine 2 years ago from them and it fruited last year.  They are pretty good, I'm surprised more people aren't growing them.  It looks like they have 2 types as well, with one cultivar called "Jim Gerdemann", which might be a bit more cold hardy.

I've read they do well in partial shade, so they'd probably do best in shady conditions in the South. That's how I plan to keep mine, until I figure out how much sun they can take. I just separated my U.m. and fertilized them.

How did you germinate the seeds? Out of three packets of seeds I only got one seed to germinate.
