Does anyone thin out mangoes?
« on: February 18, 2013, 05:36:55 PM »
I have a tree that has too many (3,4,5) 1" fruits per panicle on some of the panicles. Should I thin or let nature do the thinning? It seems a waste of the trees resources to let them all keep growing until a few drop off

I think it depends on the size of the tree.  I have a few small trees which I removed all of the mangos to encourage further growth.

With spring storms around the corner, nature will work for you, unless the tree is very small 3-7gal size I wouldn't worry about it.

Let nature do it. In past years I thinned some overly laden panticles only to have the wind knock off what was left leaving nothing.

Nature is great at taking care of these situations, not to worry.

I agree to let nature work, but it is a known practice to pick off flowers or immature fruit to let the remaining one grow bigger.  Do it if u care to find out for yourself

I pick misformed ones of if there are plenty on a branch. The largest cluster  on 1 branch is 3 ndm so far.

I let nature do it for me also...the exception is when I see that they are yellowing on the tips, when I see them I pick those off just to speed up the process since they wiill fall off anyways. Too many other factors that are beyond our control and picking them off to thin out the crops when they look healthy is a gamble...my luck I'll pick the wrong one and those will fall off too,lol...

Here's some of the yellowing ones that usually fall. These are about dime or quarter size...

Not really.
I left 3 fruits on my 2ft tall Kwan (like a giant NDM). Nature had no interest in thinning and even after I tried thinning/removing twice it threw more flowers and set more fruits. My kinda tree!  ;)

That is interesting, what will the small tree do? Bend under the weight of the giant mango's or just let them go.

I still have 3 chocanon's pingpongball size on my 5 inch scion but they are hanging in a net.
