governor plum seeds
« on: July 24, 2013, 06:43:23 PM »
I've got a handful of governor plum seeds (15 - 20).  I am not sure what they are known as locally but in Trinidad they are called governor plums.

It's known as Spondias purpurea or Purple Mombin here. The seeds will likely be sterile in FL due to lack of male trees. In their native range in Central America, the female trees are able to be pollinated by the male trees and the seeds will be viable.

Now that's a problem,  i germinated lots of spondias purpureas and spondias mombin but since i have not many space i was planning to keep just one each, it seems i need to keep at least two or three each and hope for the best.  i wonder if is the same for all spondias, because i really really want to grow Umbu (spondias tuberosa) which is uncommon in my area.

After reviewing all of the pictures online of what everyone posted, what I know as governor plum (in Trinidad) is Spondias purpurea or Purple Mombin.

No, it is both. Common names vary throughout the world. In Trinidad, Spondias purpurea is known as governors plum and Flacourtia indica is known as ceres.

Roy,
You can have different common names for fruit regionally even within the same language. Spondias purpurea can be all three, purple mombin, governors plum, and hog plum. What does not change is the scientific name.

Yeah I guess your right when the names can vary from different regions. Here in Hawaii, governors plum is flacourtia indica., and spondias dulcis is known as Wi apple.
