Thats what Quince is for too , if that one grows easily at your location as well.

I've heard you can graft loquat on firethorn. I'm gonna try it eventually. There's a wild firethorn bush down the street from me if there's any interest in the seeds. Berries on it now. Have a few growing from last year's seeds for my own projects. Be awesome to have a severely dwarfed but yet highly productive quality fruiting loquat.

So glad your here moderating Sheehan.
I enjoy the myriad of opinions too .
I think it’s too dangerous to the ego to NOT get called out on your BS. Having nothing but YesMen around you is just too inflating. Reality is the supply and demand will work itself out. There are people who can pay the mark up to get what they want with relative ease. There are people that know hot to plant lots of Sapodilla seeds and graft plant material from friends. Whichever route you choose, or anywhere in between you gotta get you a butter scotch, unless your like me and not hot enough to grow SapoD.
Speaking of SapoD , looks like he cashed out and skipped the question and answer period.

People just be chasing dollar signs. Nothing wrong with marking something up 5- 10 times because a fool and his/her money are soon parted. Nothing wrong with marking up masks and sanitizers 5-10 times during a health crisis right. People may as well burn money in a warming fire with all the stupid crap they buy. The more people pay for a fruit tree, the more value and care (value) they’ll put into it.
Hype, the varietal name ( butterscotch sounds yummier than Alano , yah?) And presumed rarity drives the market, even if its a sour, small large seed bird food fruit, not that this particular one is.

Rollinia’s were reclassified as Annona recently because the flower’s arent different enough to not have them classified as Annona with the other Annona’s.
These are the cold tolerant “Rollinia’s” from south Brazil.
Cold tolerant Annona from south Brazil.
Rugulosa
Sylvatica
Neosericea
Neosalicifolia is better fruit

Some of these must be available in the US because myself and others are growing them.

Planting and caring for a grove for 5-10 years , what is normally a delicious fruit , Atemoya, only to find out the tree’s look great, the hand pollinated fruits are setting and getting bigger but guess what they never ripen , always split , rot and are inedible.
Meanwhile the Cherimoya tree’s in the same planting area are delicious.
The tree’s look the same , so you have, the learning experience and no fruit or a productive Cherimoya orchard. I would hedge 80-20 with Cherimoya and if the Atemoya work out and you prefer them then topwork some of your cherimoya at that point.

Ben G’s friendly advice is priceless on this thread.
Cherimoya and paw paw are the known Annona relatives to ripen properly in the Bay Area. Some others can be grown but the fruit may be inedible from not conducive winter conditions, greenhouse or not.
wont hurt to try!  ;D

. . .  there are quite some more cold hardy annonas though, like annona montana, rollinia (cold tolerant ones), marolo lisa, etc.

Cold tolerant Rollinia, eh?  Which species?  Would that perhaps imply that certain R. deliciosa strains are more cold tolerant than others?  Which cultivars (named)?  How cold tolerant?  Mine just went thru 41ºF. plus several other days of 43-45ºF, too, and seems unfazed except for some leaves turning yellow.  It's in a 7 gallon pot now and about 4; tall with the main trunk at 1-1/2" dia.  It is out under the sky, getting full sun.  Also sits in a saucer to provide it with ample water.

And, BTW, my Ilama is holding  up well; its leaves are still green.  It is next to an A. squamosa whose leaves ar starting to turn yellow.  Both are in 5 gallon pots and are  4' and 3' tall respectively.

There is also an Atemoya 'Gefener' which sits out near the Rollinia and is showing leaf yellowing but otherwise is fine.

Lastly I bought one of those Annona sp. (Golden Sugar Apple, Pineapple Annona) from TT before I learned that it may just be a pond apple) and it also made it through 41ºF with no damage.  And I also got from TT an A. montana, currently in a 1 gallon pot and only 18" tall, which made it thru this same cold spell with no damage.

Hope that offers the OP some ideas about cold tolerance in Annonas.  This cold spell was a good test for me and all of the other tropical fruit that I've gotten remained unaffected. Even a Eugenia stipitata (Araça-boi) which is supposed to hate the cold and to stop growing at 60ºF, has kept growing and flowering, although it looked a bit wilty after 41ºF, but it has recovered and showed no damage other than a few of the flower buds browned off.

Cheers!

Paul M.

« on: December 08, 2020, 02:43:25 PM »
If your trying to pop rollinia and soursop in winter you may want to pony up a little bit for a cheap or free  seedling heat mat, it will help germinating everything.

Your greenhouse temps are in the 40’s at night unless you have a heat source.
Try germinating all your sub tropical seeds on a heat mat in winter.
Don’t have :(

There will be California grown Cherimoya iN various markets for the next 9 months of the long south to north harvest season, but I have never seen any varieties labeled, wishful thinking. They absolutely should be.
Do some cherimoya forum searches to learn about good cultivars for your area or in general.
Sometimes the best info is archived.

Soursop is $20 a pound in California and its rarely even decent.
I seen moldy brown one’s for $20 a pound .

900
From the same sellers in Africa that the seller got the seeds from?
Maybe its forest house cameroon, can’t remember.
They’ve been offered and sold on the forum before.
I just saying list your price that you want to sell for because that is how the buy/sell board rolls.

100000 dollars and don't forget 500 for shipping ;D . I mean where else can you buy these???
