Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Alano sapodilla

It should be now.

FWIW, Asian people told me to stay away from illama. They all said the fruit sucks. On the side of the spectrum, Américan of all shades all swear up and down that the fruit is good. If I have to make a wager, I will go with them Asians.

That's being said, I have a red illama. I will use it to pollinate my atemoyas. That might enhance the flavors of the atemoya.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is this Atemoya or cherimoya?
« on: September 21, 2023, 05:26:48 AM »
It's a cherimoya, Playa. Atemoya has mutant looking skin especially the African pride. Cherimoya has flat and symmetrical skin and bumps.

Went to 168 market the other day and purchased what they had labeled as Cherimoya but to me it looks atemoya due to the small spikes. The flesh closest to the inner skin wall was grainy. Overall the fruit was guddddddd!

Thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Alano Sapodilla Fruit set
« on: September 13, 2023, 06:06:02 AM »
My Alano sets fruits with no issues. I believe sapodillas need humidity to set fruits. In order to increase humidity around my sapodillas, I planted a bunch of Mexican sunflowers and installed misters (foggers) to each tree. I have my foggers on twice a day. I use these types of nozzles because I have a surplus of them. Used to install them in our commercial greenhouse operations. But you don't have to use these types. Any foggers from Amazon would do. Good luck.

This year, my alano sapodilla has thousand of flowers but no fruit set.  All the buds seems to be drying and dying off.  Is there a way to improve the fruit set?  I give it extra water & fertilizer this year.  Does it need to be cross-pollinated?  Location zone 10a/b.

I am from the Redlands area of southern California. I have successfully fruited sapodillas. No hand pollination. However, I do have misters to provide humidity and aid in pollination (maybe).

Here are some of the mango trees from my friend's house. He has over 40 varieties grafted on turpentine and planted in the ground from 15 to 45 plus gallon. He lives about a mile down the hill from my place. He's very successful with growing mangoes on turpentine rootstock in California. Growing mangoes on turpentine rootstock can be done in southern California. Unlike him, I don't have the patience and can only grow seedlings. I also a bunch of them on my plot. We live in the Redlands area. Enjoy.

👍 I am curious too. I just planted some sweet tart seeds in the ground and they are starting to sprout now. I am planning to cover them in the winter. Thanks.

If i manage to get a seed from the few mangoes that produced this year, should i plant it in ground right away, even though winter is just around the corner?

Tried to send you a PM, but not sure if it made to you. I would like some seeds too. Thanks

Bump - if anyone needs any Sweet Tart seeds, let me know and I'll send them this weekend.

Ken,

That's awesome! We used to farm for a living. We had multiple wells and 6 5000 gallon storage tanks with 10 100 gallon pressurized tanks and two massive pumps to move water throughout the farm. Don't go cheap on wells and equipment especially with 60 acres of land. Good luck.

Hawkfish,

Nice looking specimens. I live near Hawkfish. Here's my LZ, it's about 8 months in the ground.

Skhan,

My PMs didn't get to your inbox for some weird reason. Please, send me a PM. I'd like to buy a machete ice cream bean from you.

Thanks,

Palologrower,

Did you get my PM with regard to red escalate, Grimal, and Cabelludinha?

Thanks,

palologrower,

I am interested in your red escalate and grimal jabocotiba. Do you ship to California? Thanks.

David

Behl,

How much is your budding tape?

Thanks,

Weiss613,

Impressive collection of mangoes you have there. How many varieties of mangoes do you have? Thanks. Regards.

I am not sure, but I planted 3-4 different varieties within a 10x30 space. I am a dumb horticulturist, but I think this grouping of sapodilla would help me with pollination and fruiting.
By the way, I also have Haysa. Hope that helps.

Does a Hasya sapodilla need another sapodilla tree in the same yard or is it X (how many?) miles away for cross pollination?  I live in Miami near Homestead so there's other trees in the area though my direct adjacent neighbors don't have them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What are you growing in riverside?

Combination of noob inexperience and other factors. I hope I have learned my lesson.

Thank you! What do you think is giving you trouble? The wind? Heat? In Fresno we get hotter in summer and far colder in winter and I've been growing them without any issue so far.

Hello mate,

I am near Riverside. Mango is still elusive for me, but I could grow pretty much everything here. Talking about mangoes and jabocotiba, let me introduce you to my friend, hawkfish007, but his forum name should have been socalfruitemperor. I'd consider him king of mangoes and jabocotiba in southern California. He's been very successful with them. He has all of the top varieties here. As for me, I am still struggling with VP, NDM, and LZ.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Stake Mango Tree Branches or No?
« on: November 15, 2020, 02:35:34 PM »
Where's the like button? 👍

You guys should go buy some rebar.
Pound into ground.
Tie some together for bracing.

They will train your trees and help with high wind.
I paid $7 for 20’ 1/2” rebar over here.
Cut into 3 inside HD using their cutter.
End up with 3 6’8” per 20’
That’s around $2 a stake.
Cheap and last a long time.

Hawkfish007,

Congratulations! You're definitely mango king. You have successfully grown turpentine roostck mangoes in southern California. That's no easy task. I live practically near to you and have failed at growing mangoes here.

I guess your success proves that there's no such thing as turpentine vs Manila rootstock. It is all boiled down to grower's dedication and techniques.
