Most sprouts seen from polyembryonic mango seed
« on: August 29, 2018, 11:18:07 PM »
I heard polyembryonic mango seeds can send up as many as 20 shoots. I have a Cac seed currently with 14. What is the most you have seen?

Footnote: has anyone noticed Cac leaves are uneven widths left to right?  The leaf’s dividing line is off centre.

The most I've personally seen are 11 from a Baptiste.

The one Cac seed I planted never sprouted, so I don't know about the leaves being off center. I did notice some Baptiste will put out a single leaf low on the stalk.

6 from a Cac and 5 from a Sweet Tart. Was able to separate 4 sprouts from each and they're about 3 ft - 5 ft tall now.

No where to plant it ...but at least I got it. ;)

haha! I remember looking at some of the cac seeds and tripping out on the # of embryos.

They have separate tap roots, so it's juts a matter of teasing out the intertangled feeder roots.

How is the separation done?

Thanks,

Poly...all sprouts are clones, except for one which is zygotic.

I’ll check my CAC/COC seedlings tomorrow. I never counted and I’m not at home right now but from my memory, I believe the most I’ve gotten was 6-8 from Piña Colada.

I’ve seen Polyembryonic Mangos with multiple shoots coming from one root.

I’ve also noticed that when the main shoot gets damaged, the embryo often puts out multiple other shoots. I’ve seen this with Monoembryonic and Polyembryonic seedlings.

Looks like the most I currently have is six from several Piña Coladas.

I separated my Cac sprouts today. Only one was a double sprout from a single root. One hardly had any root to speak of. The other 11 were fine.
