Hi, I found a fully grown avocado that was wrinkling or more like shriveling on the tree (waiting to see how it develops off the tree but I'm not expecting much). Only one so far - why would that happen?  On the same tree I'm picking avocados that come off leaving their stem behind, already softening slightly (not softening so much as unhardening), that then when they mature off the tree wrinkle a tiny bit around the stem end. Quality of the fruit is excellent though, creamy and not rubbery at all. Any ideas as to what's going on?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Kampong avocado pear shaped?
« on: November 02, 2022, 11:13:19 AM »
My top-worked to Kampong tree is holding its first fruit this year. They are distinctly pear-shaped as you can see in the photos - has anyone seen them like this before?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / graft question
« on: October 04, 2022, 03:10:25 PM »
Hey grafting gurus, how long after grafting can we reasonably presume that there might be communication between the rootstock and the scion? I assume any scion activity in the first week is coming from the scion alone. So when more or less does that assumption stop being correct?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / when to pick this M4 (with pics)
« on: June 07, 2022, 01:02:03 PM »
Hi all. This is my first year with M4 fruit. This one pictured was the first to put on size and now is giving me vibes. But I have no experience and would love to pick at the closest to right time possible. What do the experts say?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / when to pick Oro Negro avocado
« on: December 26, 2021, 10:49:34 AM »
Did a forum search but couldn't find this info - if I missed it please pass me the link. I have my first and only Oro Negro fruit turning black now. Any tips on how to know when to pick? With our Pollock's we mostly just wait for drops but I don't know if that's the way to go with this variety. Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
Does anyone know of any of the "new" (as in from the last 10 years) and/or Zill varieties being grown in places with no cold stress to induce flowering? Are there any that are known to or not to flower under such conditions?
Thanks!

Hi there, does anyone know what month one might expect flowers from a jackfruit in northern South America? No one I know here has one or knows about it. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / grafting experts, a question:
« on: October 03, 2020, 07:14:34 PM »
I know that for best results you want an active rootstock and a scion with swelling buds which means it's full of energy. But who's ultimately in control of whether a graft takes? Does the rootstock grab hold of the scion or does the scion latch on to the rootstock?
This is a hard question to word well but I'll leave it like that for now and clarify further if necessary. Thanks everyone!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trying to contact dongeorgio
« on: July 14, 2020, 11:14:15 AM »
I’ve emailed him several times and gotten no response. With th COVID numbers like they are in FL I can’t help but worry. Is anyone here in touch with George?

I have 4 ginormous sapodilla trees on my property. Two give pumpkin shaped fruit with dark flesh, sometimes slightly grainy (not at all offensive), intensely sweet and richly flavored. I couldn't pin down what the flavor was exactly until the other day when it just hit me - root beer! It tastes like the best root beer ever! Has anyone else ever detected root beer flavor in a sapodilla or is it just me (or just my sapodillas)?

Hi all. We have 4 giant seedling sapodilla trees on our property all of which produce lots of excellent fruit. But I’m curious to try a cultivated variety and had the opportunity to bring down a small Molix. One of our trees is especially tall and produces less than the others with most of the fruit too high to reach, so we decided it was a good candidate to cut back and graft at least a few branches with the Molix. I’ve done this successfully with citrus, mango and avocado but have never tried grafting sapodilla. Has anyone done this? How do you deal with the látex? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your input.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to prune/train/trellis Mysore raspberry
« on: December 18, 2019, 07:20:36 AM »
Hi everyone,
I know most people here disdain the Mysore but I find the shade-ripened fruit to be delicious, plus it's perfect as an impenetrable barrier for security purposes, with fruit as a bonus! Our original planting, however, is not in a location where we want it going wild so we need to tame it somehow. I just don't know where I'm supposed to cut in order to maximize fruit production and minimize its sprawling. Can anyone help or direct me to a guide or something? Much appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango budwood question
« on: October 07, 2019, 10:57:12 AM »
Hi everyone. Does new mango growth have to be fully hardened off in order to use it for budwood? I have new growth that's like 2/3 of the way there, and the rootstock plant is ready to go. Should I go for it or wait? Experts? Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Size of red jabo tree?
« on: June 10, 2019, 07:31:04 PM »
Can anyone tell me the size of a red jabo tree when grown in pretty much tropical conditions? Trying to figure out where to plant mine out. Do they have aggressive roots?
Thanks!

Hi everyone,
Rainy season has begun and it's time to get these guys in the ground. To choose their spots, I need to know their relative heights, root vigor (will any want to bust through concrete?), and nutritional requirements. Height in particular is important as I'm planting on a slope, especially for the uvaia, I can't find anything on that one. Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please ID this plant (Eugenia?) w/pics
« on: May 05, 2019, 08:54:39 PM »
This was sold to me as a jaboticaba "café". The seller is trustworthy so I think it was an honest mistake. But it's obviously not a jabo so...what is it?? It looks Eugenia-like, but it's none of the Eugenias I already have. Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pitomba planter question
« on: April 28, 2019, 06:22:38 PM »
Hi all. I'd like to plant a pitomba (E. luschnathiana) in a bottomless concrete box measuring 60"×43". Will it do well in there and will it not eventually try to break through the concrete? Any other fruit trees you'd recommend for such a space? Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My sapodillas!
« on: April 28, 2019, 06:17:06 PM »
I just have to show off our trees loaded with saps! We bought this house/property last year and one of the first things we did was cut way back 2 of the 4 ginormous sapodilla trees. This year the crop is off the hook and the fruit - if you are PATIENT and don't pick too soon - is just sublime. Lots of variety in size, from smallish to huge.
