Title: One more tree.
Post by: Tropicdude on May 27, 2017, 04:53:05 PM
Will be in S. Fla next couple of week,  I might get another tree put in at my mothers house in Hollywood.   I would like to get one of the new Zill releases.   looking for something late season, and compact ( or at least easily controlled ).  disease tolerance is a plus, as these trees will pretty much have little care.

The ones I have been considering so far are:
Honey Kiss
Venus
Cotton Candy

Also something not so finicky on picking at the right time,    also any other suggestions is welcome.    there are some other varieties that have been mentioned but not much data on them,  M4  Kathy,   etc.

Honey Kiss is the latest.  Cotton Candy is more of an August mango, with Venus varying from August to September.

Both Venus and Honey Kiss are more finicky as to harvest time.:
Honey Kiss  - too early and it doesnt have that honey flavor and usually seems to internally rot at the stem.
Venus - pick too early and it is tart/sour and chalky

Update to this post.

I ended up getting the Cotton Candy on that visit.   I was told it survived Irma, along with the Pickering and Edgar.  but I lost the huge Valencia Pride.  I had them cut it down to a stump, after the main root broke, and was leaning over the house. (was about 45-50 ft tall ).   next spring I hope to put something in its spot.  now comes  "One more tree  2.0 ".

I would like to increase the season,   by either adding an early season or late season.   from what I have already,  I gather they are in this order:

Pickering
Edgar
Cotton Candy.

For late season option I am looking at  Kathy,  or Honey Kiss.   correct me if I'am wrong  I think HK is the latest of the new Zill varieties?   but what would people recommend for post Cotton candy ?

If I decide to go early,  only one on my list so far is PPK.   what other decent Pre-Pickering  varieties ?

For early and easy ppk would be good. Florigon too.
Late I think honey kiss is the latest. If your not looking to be wowed with flavor I think Nancy or Deloris were supposed to be late as well.
Or you can go with Beverly

coconut cream is early too I think but it's a light producer and the tree is fragile to wind damage
