Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: OTT MANGO
« on: June 18, 2023, 09:28:34 PM »
I 'm sorry I just found this thread so late.  I have a 25+ year old Ott mango tree.  As I recall it was the only Ott mixed in the a group of Dot mangoes, so I grabbed it.   I like the Ott, and I'm pleased I bought it.   First off it's not a dwarf.  I planted it next to a Florigon at the same time and they are just about the same size, 30'+.  Secondly the fruit has little to no fiber and has a nice mango flavor with a hint of citrus.  You might try ripening on the counter by picking a few days before it's ready, and possibly get the best flavor as with a few other mango cultivars.   My tree is moderately productive, with 3/4 lb fruit.  This year it was loaded until a freak hail storm battered my area a few weeks ago. About 80% of my mangoes from several trees hit the ground.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Garcinia lateriflora flowering

Almost 10 years of posts regarding a plant of mine, G lateriflora which now has about 20 fruit on it.  The largest is the size of a walnut.  Can anyone give me some guidance on when to harvest, & how to tell when ripe.  The Internet has limited info.  The tree has been in the ground for 11 years and this is it's first fruiting.

This is an old thread, that I just read, and hope someone is still paying attention to it.  I have a 9 yr old Garcinia lateriflora growing in the ground, located just south of Palm Bay, Fl  It is doing quite well, is about 8' high, but has not flowered.  How old do they need to be to flower and produce fruit?

This is the third year of harvest for my Alampur Banershan.  Every fruit has cracked.  This is not a split like NDM, but an irregular crack or on some multiple cracks.  It does not affect but the skin and perhaps 1/16" into the flesh.  Even with this said, it is in my top 5 of best tasting mangos.   At our Tropical Fruit Club meeting a few months ago, the speaker, a commercial mango grower, was asked why he didn't mention the A B mango, and he said, the cracking problem has not been solved, the fruit while very delicious, could not be sold.  He said I should have planted an Alphonso!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugar Apple variety big red ?
« on: June 05, 2018, 12:33:39 PM »
While I am aware that this is a rather old topic, I just wanted to add that I had a red and a green A squamosa.  They were planted on the south side of my home side by side.  Each year that they produced, they had about 10 to 12 fruit.  The green one was a bit more prolific.  After eating them both at one sitting many times, I could not detect the slightest difference in taste between the two, each was equally delicious!  The red one had it's beauty going for it, the green a bit more productive.  Sadly a prolonged cold snap kill them both! :o(

Hi Nurse Jolly,  I'm curious as to how your mango trees are doing some 3 years later?   I read many of the posts following your request for assistance.  Many had very good advice and guidance.

I see this topic is dated.  But here's my 2 cents.  I have several mango trees, some Fl Varieties, some SE Asia varieties, and an excellent seed grown.  None of my mango trees are from India.  They just don't seem to thrive in my area (S Brevard Co).  The NDM #4, today's preferred cultivar, does well most everywhere it's warm enough.

My young Cecropia peltata is getting ready to bloom.  Is there anything I can do to enhance the chances of it fruiting?  It's in a 10 gallon pot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Excalibur Fruit Trees
« on: May 27, 2012, 10:26:26 AM »
Made my first trip to Excalibur yesterday with the Brevard Tropical Fruit Club.  It was not my first trip to a nursery, but it was one of the best for variety of really rare fruit trees and some unusual cultivars.  They were very courteous, helpful and the prices were reasonable.  Cruising around the nursery in a golf cart was nice too.  :o)

Hi everyone, I just an old warthog rooting his way through gardens and compost piles.  Enjoy growing tropical fruit trees, but most of all eating the fruit.  I am joining this site hoping to increase my knowledge and exposure to rare and new tropical fruit trees.
