Wallichiana and zalacca are composite species based on their genetic diversity.Balis ie subs. amboina probably originated on other nearby islands like ambon an awful long time ago.The 20 to 30 zalacca lines in indonesia each have their own varieties and the yogiyarta area is supposed to have good ones.Wallichiana is classified according to degree of domestication and improvement in thailand rather than taxonomically.Hybrids exist around chanthaburi but the sala sumalee and noen wong are not hybrids and fall under the umbrella of wallichiana.

Where does affinis fit in?  I'm growing affinis, wallichiana and zalacca but do not know any of their subspecies.

S.affinis is one of the species in Borneo that has edible fruit like many in the genus. It won't be as good in quality as the cultivated types. The plant is likely to be far thornier than your zalacca and wallichiana unless they are less domesicated cultivars. The best wallichiana have loose skin that is easy to tear open by hand.

Fruitlover the supermarkets and roadside markets selling sala usually are flogging sala moh and sala sane'.While they can look similar to the real deal, with loose skin and even a bit of a point these pretenders are higher in acid.i would put them on par with the lowland bali 'pineapple core' types.

Steven,
Now you're in the salak game you have to come up with bali gukla pasir or thai sumalee. The trick is to grow from suckers once you figure out which seedlings are male and female as suckers fruit faster.Male S.wallichiana and S.zallaccas can also improve the yield of mono balis. One way is to plant 10 seedlings out in a row when they flower ditch all but 2 males and fill the gaps with female suckers off.Don't let the plants fall over while young or they will tiller.

Hi Mike,

Excellent info and tips as alway's  ;) Thanks :)

Definitely ;) sucker's is the way to go with salaks...with the add advantage of being true to type. Since S.wallichiana and S.zallaccas are close related, they will be compatible with each other. as you said...they will improve fruit set. 8)

Will see if I can get my hands on those var. ;)

Salak seeds are very easy to germinate and usually have 100% germination as long as they don't start to mildew. Love the fruit, hate the thorny plants! Steven, suggest planting in permanent position or in very deep pot. Despite what Mike T says they definitely don't like to be transplanted. They like filtered sunlight when small. Good to protect them from wind. Good luck.

With thai Salak seeds is the viability is fairly short and true enough fruit lovers from shade or filtered sun when small to filtered or full when older.Improved types are much smaller and less thorny with leaves more like 2.5m max rather than 5m max. I have found them resilient to transplant shock but some clay in the potiing mix will help hold it together when planting out.If yours are rakum or sakum the fierce thorns will quickly show they are closer to the wild types.
