One year mango grafts
« on: May 15, 2015, 01:05:46 PM »
I've been thinning some of the clusters from my one year old grafts. What is the general rule with one year grafted mango trees, how many should you let the tree hold?

I would simply let the young trees drop their fruit naturally.

I used to pull fruit, until I read that the fruit is natural weights and helps the branch get horizontal growth, instead of allowing it to keep growing vertically.

My vote is let nature go.

I'll let it ride. I just didn't want the young grafts to snap

I would keep an eye on the ones holding fruit.  It is possible that too much weight/sress could cause the new limb to break in the area of the graft union.

Our California mango trees grow so slow, it is a problem letting the fruit hold at only one year. I would just prune it to a good shape and you can always weigh down any branches you want to keep as scaffolding.

Thanks Rob and Mark I will monitor the fruits to make sure it doesn't stress the unions. I would like to keep these trees to 7-8' so I'm not really worry about the growth plus they are on Ataulfo rootstock.

I agree with Robs assessment.

Those fruits will probably crack and fall off anyhow.  I'd leave them until they start to split and then thin out progressively for better strength, and let the last 1 or 2 fall naturally.

Awesome one year grafts JF! Your trees are much healthier than mine but here is what I do to the fruit on my one and two year grafts:

I've done some thinning but I have 10-12 varieties in this tree I would like to try to determine wether it stays or goes.
Richard
I had AZ make some Chutney last year with green ataulfos before I top worked the tree
