Tropical Fruit: Code words, Slang, and Street talk
« on: June 28, 2015, 11:57:56 AM »
Let's have some fun, I'm ready to get this thread started  :):

when a seedling of another species pops up in a potted plant, we call it a "Hitchhiker" or "Stowaway"  (they are just looking for a vehicle to ride in, and a happy home)

when a seedling of the same species pops up in a potted plant (usually from dropped fruit), we call it an "insurance policy" (if your mother tree dies, you have a back up plant, ready to go, in the same pot)

jaboticaba = jabo

Tommy Atkins = Tommy Asskiss (taste like a port-o-let smells)

Haden = Has Been

Sweet heart = Sweet shit (in FL it has earned this title, for being the most unproductive highly touted lychee in existence)

Runt fruit (nubbin) = Danny Devito

will keep adding more as they come along.  ;D

lol...not exactly slang, but I love some of the alternate names for fruit:

Paw Paw = Poor Man's Banana

imagine trying to market the fruit under that name.

Our sweetheart lychee produced just as much as our Brewster this year and looks better overall, but our trees are still small (in the ground 2 years or so).

nice!

I'd say you are an exception to the rule.

Hopefully the tree keeps pumping fruits out...everyone else I know has poor production.

as for jabos,

Sabara always gets called "black" or "regular" jabo  (not saying i use these names,  but they are understood)

the Grimal is called "Gremlin" within a small community of growers...LOL

have also seen the "white" called "green" jabo...which is easily understood.

The common name for a wild seedling that spouts on its own is a'volunteer.'

can we agree to call the first GMO oranges, "Oranges of the Agent of Agent Orange"?

well, if not, maybe it would be a good title for a news article when they are created.  ;)

I'm sure there must be GM oranges hey though I couldn't say with any authority.
All red grapefruit varieties are the progeny of genetically modified organisms they used radiation exposure to trigger the red hybrids we have now!

Some words/terms for fruity phytophiles:

Holy grail-rare species or variety person has been coveting for a long time.
Cerrado curse- the difficulty and casualties people experience when growing plants from this region.
Dorgonned- to be scammed by an unscrupulous seed dealer.
Last tree I will plant- almost certainly not the last tree
Zone pushing- growing plants in climates outside the limits of their natural climates

Let's not forget "pugging".

ya what's the deal with the origins of that name?

The name derives from the masterful pruning member, Nancy (Puglvr1) who wowed us all with her daring (and I do mean daring...showing no fear in pruning a new tree down to a virtual stump in order to get the perfect tree growth habit) and dramatic pruning of her potted trees to create some of the most beautifully structured trees imaginable.  This term was coined on the old Garden Web Forum and survives to this day.

when you are growing a plant that takes over 20yrs to fruit from seed, we say, "you're serving 25 to life"

I know some people serving hard time, their only crime, being a fruit addict...Myrciaria trunciflora, Myrciaria coronata and Plinia edulis can turn into a lengthy sentence...but the taste of freedom will be magnificent when you are finally discharged.

I hear green sapote and peach palm are a few others that can seem like a life sentence of waiting for flowers.
