Post by: pinkturtle on August 01, 2020, 11:35:06 PM
Hi,

I purchased a bag of fresh Mangosteen from local supermarket today.  Can Mangosteen grow in California?

Thanks,
Al

You can try but mangosteen is a ultra tropical, meaning its extremely picky. Even here in central america there is a level of skill required to succed

Chances are high that the fruit came from Thailand and they have been irradiated...more than likely sterilizing the seeds.  Doesn't hurt to try though.  Just keep your expectations low.

if you can sprout, you will need to grow in a greenhouse or similar setting. they like it humid and cannot take cold temps, especially when small.

The mangosteen fruit I got from Thailand was likely irradiated, I planted the seeds but no sprouts.  Not sure if yours are or not

More chance of the martians landing in California than mangosteens fruiting outside. Even on islands polewards of 20 latitude would be challenging.

Only place in continental US where purple mangosteen fruited is in Florida, with only 3 confirmed cases I believe. Besides the seeds being irradiated (all mangosteen fruit being imported into the US has to be irradiated) growing it would be a waste of time.

Hey Bud do you know if the Floridian examples were on the mainland and exposed to the full ravages of the outdoors?

the trees that were at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens were protected, indoor greenhouse area. They were 15 feet tall or so, and fruiting.

All of the plants were grown in protected conditions.

Imposible to grow or fruit outdoors in California. It fruits well and unprotected in Cienfuegos Cuba at 22 latitude and Yucatán Mexico at 20 latitude.

Didn't Whitman grow/fruit mangosteen outdoors in South Florida?

Yes...Whitman fruited mangosteen.  A woman in Miami has fruited one as well.  It is growing outside.  She has also just fruited pulasan.

Any reason it couldn’t be grown in a greenhouse farther north?  I assume light becomes a factor at some point.

Yes, Whitman fruited mangosteen, but in a very uniquely protected spot in Miami Beach, surrounded by coastal waters.
If the woman referred to is Paulette, I believe her mangosteen is in a large pot.  The fruit were very small.

Well I guess it's possible with special care and circumstances in Florida and I guess the Cuban one at 22 latitude has warm seas close also.
