Cookie,
Thats a decent sized tree!! probably wouldnt get too much bigger i would think.  So you think its average taste wise? the ones i tried were very tasty and cherry of the rio i had was really good!! either our taste buds are very different or theres a big difference in the taste from tree to tree.

Agreed!

pitombas and cherrys of rio aren't mediocre to me at all.

They're a wonderful berry, full of succulent, and delicious pulp.

There is quite a bit of variation within most Eugenia species, so if you've only tasted the fruits from one or two trees...you haven't really familiarized yourself with all of the flavors that exist.

haha With the exception of jablotcaba I just let the eugenias fall to the ground. I might sample a few as I'm walking past one on the way to a mango tree, but that's about it. Supposedly my tree was layered from a good cultivar.

They make nice landscape specimens to fill in the areas between the mango trees.

All the non-jabo eugenias that were in mango-plantable locations got the axe, but that pitomba is strategically placed so as not to affect mango plantings :-)

Grumichama makes a great windblock to protect mango trees from high winds.

hahaha

Here is a picture of my Pitomba in the foreground. It recently fruited and the flavor was better than last year. I like them, however, they are not a top tier favorite.  I agree with Adam, the fruit needs to be fully ripe for the best flavor.  It just finished flowering again with what looks to be its best output to date. I did have a branch dieback recently.

Nice tree and nice yard! As Adam keeps bringing up, and i want to second, there is a lot of variation in eugenias. If the best ones are found, grafted, and distributed that way, then the reputation of this fruit will go up considerably. Also fruiting time can be cut down. I nominate Adam to do it!  ;D

I second the nomination!  ;)  I am still waiting for him to offer some grafted cherry of the rio after teasing us with the superior ones he found but all I have heard are crickets.   :'(

That's funny Cookie , I cut all my mangos , if I don't pick the fruit before the rains they are with maggots and mangos are so inexpensive here , can't kill them they keep on sending up new growth . I am curious if the KUINI  M. odorata ( fruiting now ) will have the same problem ? Anybody knows ?

now look at what you've done cookiemon!

You've planted a mango seed, in a perfectly fine Eugenia thread!

I have some weeds to pull now!!    ;D

:-) Yah, we're spoiled here in FL not having the med fly, and I did notice that El Salvador puts zero effort into improving or cultivating mangoes -- the outdoor markets are rife with campesinos selling mangoes picked in the countryside. Probably same goes for MX.

Looks amazing, this is a must grow for me :). I do have a few seedlings going but they have no size to them atm.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

they grow painfully slow at first, but once you get past the 3 yr, 3ft mark, you can start to get excited.

Most Eugenias I've grown don't set fruit the first time they flower.  This one seems to set every flower that's ever blossomed.  I like that! It's also been a slow grower for the most part, and easy to keep small.  It seems like it's barely grown since I've got it.

The crop size is also 10x as large this year!

I only had 4 last year.  This year there is easily 50 maybe more.  We'll see how it rates flavor wise.

they ripen up fast...I keep eating them a bit too early and the flavor is off.  It really pays to let them ripen as much as possible

Very nice, can you take some photos with the fruit in your hand and/or a ruler?

Ptiombas the size of a fig? That would have to be a very tiny fig. The pitombas i had were about same size as grumichamas.

wonderful, my mouth waters, I will have to cultivate them some day:-D, along with the pitangatuba who say it is very tasty too.

is true that eugenias are slow to bear fruit, the Uvaia flourished here 2 or 3 times this summer but no fruit, not the pitanga, and are trees of height 1.8 m

Had my first pitomba today and it was very tasty.  As with Adam it was much better than last year which was its first year fruiting.  It had no resinous piney flavor that it had last year.  Can't wait for the rest of the harvest.  Also, my pitombas are about twice the size of my grums.

Hi jb_fla,

Sounds like a winner. How many years did you have to wait until your first crop of pitomba?
