Anonna montana & A. squamosa 'Pineapple' in Zone 9b . . . .
« on: October 15, 2020, 12:42:21 AM »
Just snagged two more Annona species and am wondering if there's anyone here in zone 9b who's growing them successfully. Mine are both in 1 gallon pots right now but could be moved up to larger ones soon.

One is Annona montana, the mountain soursop.

The other is (supposedly) an A. squamosa type called 'Costa Rica Golden Sugar Apple' or the 'Pineapple Annona'.

Maybe TFF menber Zoli in Costa Rica knows something about this CR Golden Sugar Apple.

I keep hearing that both these species are generally mediocre tasting but that once in a while one may run across an okay tasting one. Perhaps this could have to do with the sort of culture that they are given which might make the occasional individual better tasting than others.

OK – TIA

Cover them on cold nights--- with heavy-duty floating row cover, etc.  Use the search function on this site for previous discussions.

Did you get your "pineapple annona" from Top Tropicals?

Yes, that's where I got it.  (Both it and the A. montana, actually.)

So... Is there anything in particular that I should know about that?

pineapple annona from Top is thought by many to be pond apple.

Mine has fruited, but wasn't able to get to it in time. Covered in ants, but smelled good.

I can add nothing of value re: annona montana

Yes, I did read some earlier TFF threads on this species and that was mentioned a few times.

Also mentioned was that certain invididuals of this 'Pineapple Annona' will occasionally have more flavorful fruit.

Once upon a time I had a montana tree.  I expected its growth to be similar to my other annonas - atemoya, ilama and sugar apple. Unfortunately I was wrong. It was extremely vigorous and outgrew its area quite rapidly. After two years without a fruit, I got tired of pruning it and just chopped it down.  Shame, it was an attractive tree.  It withstood 28 degrees for more than a few hours without damage.
