Eugenia Calycina and Nelita Fruit Photos and Description
« on: April 30, 2020, 05:13:52 PM »
Here are some photos of my E. Calycina fruit and a description of the fruit's taste.
The texture is similar to a japanese plum or an apricot with the taste of a mild apricot.
No bad or astringent after taste. This example was dead ripe.
The best tasting Eugenia I've tried to date.
Beautiful black skin with a golden orange flesh.
Here are the fruit photos:

Looks good, Kevin.
This is not the Nelita seedling, is it?

No... my Nelitas are fruiting... but they are about a month behind.
This is one of those "Cherry of the Rio Grande" variations.

About 3 years from seed... which came from Miguel in Portugal.
I have five Nelitas and four have bloomed and fruited.
Still small and green... too soon to give a culinary report.
Here's what they look like now:

E calycina vs E involucrata.  Anyone have real life experience in tasting differences?

So far... every seed has gone into a pot.
I need rootstocks for grafting the mother plant onto.
Last year I successfully grafted a couple of them onto Cherry of the Rio Grandes.
Yesterday I tried to graft a few more.... but I have now run out of rootstock.
I guess I could start top grafting them onto some of my 3 and 4 year old Cherry of the Rio Grandes.

I like both of them and have had them side by side recently several times over the past 2 weeks. Both are great, but seem very variable in flavor dependent on the plant. I am assuming that is one reason for grafting them is due to the strange variation. Some are just like a cherry and others taste like spinach and cucumber combined.

I don't know if it makes a difference... but all of mine are growing in pots.
My Mother Calycina is around the 11 foot mark in a 15 gallon pot.
My "Nelitas" are in 5 and 10 gallon pots and only 2-3 feet tall. Much smaller.
Because they are in my greenhouse I hand pollinate daily.
My Mother Calycina has been blooming now for over 2 month.

10 feet tall or 10 inches... just checking as 10 feet seems pretty tall.... ( one apostrophe for feet and two apostrophe for inches)

I bet he mean 10 inches.
10 feet would be pretty impressive for 2 year old Nelita seedlings.

Kevin,
Any nelita seedlings fruit you got
similar to Miguel's?
His seem like huge fruits.
Would be interesting to know if seedlings produce true fruits.

The photo I posted above shows the "ripple" looking fruits similar to Miguels.
This is their first fruiting and the fruit is still too small to eat... but I am... as usual... hopeful!
I'll keep you posted.

Nice! One of my Nelitas has begun flowering as well. I know of one other persons who have also.  Pretty cool to see multiple different people getting fruit and flowers on plants that are consistently 3 years old! Thats some good data.
Grow cooler fruits

This is my 4 year old E. calycina
Guess how many fruit it had this year?

Here's a freebie COR
The center died and a small living side branch became the new center
Check out the Leaves in the next picture. I have 4 COR and none have a round leaf

Mike,
That 4 year old is HUGE! Congrats man.
You sort of left us hanging about the number of fruit.
It's either hundreds or none?
