Yangmei Myrica rubra flowers 杨梅花儿
« on: January 21, 2014, 04:39:21 PM »
Hello, I haven't been active on this forum in a while. One of my yangmei plants started to flower. I am curious if there are any other people with improved yangmei varieties here in California? I think my plant is a donghui but it has lost a tag.

Very nice Steven.  I want dibs on some seeds later.   ;D

It was nice meeting you by the way at the OC farm.

Nice and congrats. I didn't have any luck with trying to germinate some fresh seeds. Update, if any fruit sets and ripen :)

The seeds didn't work for me either. I had squirrels dig through my pots and I'm not sure if the seeds are still in there.

I have a surviving dongkui but it's not flowering yet.

I'm really interested in getting this variety. I don't have any of them but would really like some, image is from a Chinese website.

Yangmei are extremely hard to propagate. They have been harder to propagate than any other species I have felt with. I so far haven't been able to sprout any seeds yet but will keep trying.

Please let us know how the fruit tastes if your tree holds fruit this year. If seeds are difficult to germinate, you can make a small fortune if you can root some cuttings under an an aeroponic rooting system.

If you ever see the written instructions from how seeds are sprouted in Asia you'd notice that even they have trouble with this species. Alternating 30 day cold periods with 30 day hot periods, remove any sprouted seeds and keep it up til they all sprout and it can take many years for some. I imagine a lot of the nurseries just harvest volunteer seedlings under native trees to speed things up. I tried letting mother nature cold stratify my batch and gave up after 3 years.

My 'Zuiko' from Japan developed buds like that but they turned out to be small branches and not flowers. Somewhere I have photos of them. I'll try and find them so you can compare the two.

try washing the seeds with detergent to remove the waxy coating , soak in 300 ppm gibberellic acid 1-2 days, plant in well draining sterile medium. should get 50% germination

In case anyone is interested - Horizon Herbs out of Williams OR (www.horizonherbs.com) is selling seedlings for $15 each. They don't ship til April. Their propagator evidently knows the secret to getting these guys to sprout. I ordered some and hope to graft fruiting cultivar bud wood in the future.

I'm trying out airlayering my plant. The lower leaves of the top turned brown. I'm pretty decent at layering lychee but never tried this plant before. Maybe this is normal since it looks like the die off doesn't continue to the tip of the branch. It's been maybe 2 months since I girdled it. I need to make a few plants for insurance.

softwood tip cuttings 5-7", intermittent mist, very loose medium, near 100% success

Thanks atilla. I'm too afraid to lose any of it since my softwood rooting setup is not ideal and I've had failures before with other soft cuttings.
