Feijoa (Acca sellowiana) foliage browning, any help?
« on: December 02, 2014, 05:45:30 PM »
Any ideas what is going on with my year and a half old feijoas? I have been having this occur on 4 out of 5 of them. It is primarily on the most recent growth from summer. Any way to mitigate/remedy this problem?

Move to a warmer zone? Haven't you had some cold weather lately in 7b? Maybe the tender growth got fried. Didn't know feijoa could survive 7b winters....

OTOH that pattern looks like what happens to my blueberries when they get fried by a heat wave.

Well, I have heard mixed things. I've read that they can survive temps to 15F, if not lower. It has not been there, yet. Also, we have had a warm snap (65-70F) which is when the browning began. When the temp dropped to 25F there was zero damage. Maybe its residual from the cold temps  2 weeks ago?

I think its residual, it takes upto a few weeks sometimes to see the extent of cold damage.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Yea, oh well....I have hope that they'll make it, but hope doesn't do much unfortunately. I don't suppose a transplant back to container would be advisable at this time of year, or at all? Thanks for the input my friends :)

I would leave it be atm, moving it would just add more trauma to the plant.

One thing I learned with plants, is doing to much can be worse then doing nothing.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Fair enough. I was just worried it might be fungal or parasitic. That wouldnt happen during fall/winter would it?

Thank you! I stress about these little guys. I'm a little obsessed :). We'll see how they do over the next couple of months. *fingers crossed*

I don't work with Feijoas, but that looks like Powdery-Mildew on mangoes.  Powdery-Mildew loves temps in the 60's.
