Helping friend find good green eating mango
« on: November 17, 2019, 03:37:24 PM »
I’m trying to help my friend find a good variety of mango that is meant to be eaten in the green crunchy stage. My friend lives in Southern California and he wants to grow a variety that is sour when eaten in the green crunchy stage. I know of several varieties that are sweet in the green crunchy stage but my friend wants it sour.

He is looking for a variety that is productive and is resistant to Powdery Mildew. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my Mahachanok is sour when eaten green.   I made a green mango salad and it was super sour.   I think if you pick them early , they are sour. But if you pick them green at their almost ripen stage, they are not sour.  My sis told me she ate it green when I gave her the green maha, she said it was not sour.

Thai varieties like Falan or Kiewosavoy are meant to be eaten green. Not all mangoes are good green.

Thanks for the information!

I also tried Maha when it was green and it was sour so that’s a good candidate.

I think varieties like Keosavoy, Brahm Kai Mia, NDM are too sweet in the crunchy stage for my friends preference but I personally love these varieties in the green crunchy stage.

Most typical Florida type mangos when green are sour. That's seems to be the default. Though I'm not necessarily picking mature green.

For SE Asian varieties I had ppk green and it was pretty sour.

I've been wanting a Beverly mango to fool fruit thieves into not stealing the mostly green ripe fruits. You may want to look into it.
