Very interesting article. In early 2008, I got budwood from three of the avocados in that collection from Dr. Campbell. The 'Berta Rodriguez', 'Edas', and 'Juan Jose'. I know I gave one or two away but I can't remember if I gave them all away or the remaining one died.

The person I gave them to was supposed to plant them out, but when I followed up on it they couldnt remember if they planted them out or if they died. Oh well.

If the local market lacks interesting fruits, Campbell and Ledesma may work a trick that has many times drawn great avocados out from hiding: They drive slowly through the dirt streets of a village and, using a bullhorn, invite all the locals to bring their homegrown avocados to a weekend fruit competition, at which the best avocado will win its owner a new bicycle, previously purchased at a local shop on the expedition’s expense account. A small crowd of locals, Campbell says, is almost sure to gather at the appointed place with samples of their backyard fruits.

Carlos Today I grafted the Juan Jose scions you gave me about 3 weeks ago.  plus the others.  hopefully they take, and do well here.
my fingers are crossed.   Kahalu and San Miguel were the others tow I grafted today.   if at least 1 of each take, I'll be a happy camper.

A quote from the Article:

"avocado breeds are disappearing more quickly than Campbell and Ledesma can collect them, and many types could disappear before they are even discovered."

It sure sounds like Dr's. Campbell and Ledesma can use all the help they can get.
'Virtue' should be taught, learned and propagated, in order to save others and oneself.

Next trip to Fla, going to see if I can get a "Pura Vida" Avocado scion,  not sure about the quality on that one, but an Avocado that can grow to 3 Ft !!  that is a lot of guacamole.
