Tropical Fruit Discussion / Merritt Island Fruit Stands/Nurseries
« on: July 01, 2022, 12:01:11 AM »
Can anyone recommend any fruit stands, nurseries, or other fruit related activities/destinations around Merritt Island? We'll be visiting Nick's for mangos and maybe Rockledge Gardens but looking for other suggestions as well. I know there should be other random mango stands, but was hoping for insider info :-)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cecropia Cold Tolerance

Can anyone comment on the cold tolerance of Cecropia? Anyone in Central FL growing them/if yes how'd they do this winter?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Flavored Mango?
« on: January 21, 2022, 09:52:34 AM »
Is anyone familiar with a mango variety with an extremely strong lychee flavor with guava funk? We recently bought a mango from the local Asian supermarket, sold as "Thai Sweet", grown in PR, with a greenish/yellow color. If I had to quantify the flavor profile, it would be 10% indian mango (piney resin?), 20% guava, 70% lychee - wife and I were stunned by how odd (but good) it tasted for a mango.

Has anyone attempted or had any success with Gooseberries in warmer climates (200-400 chill hours)? My elderly father-in-law moved in with us and asked about growing gooseberries like he had in his childhood, but I can't find any evidence that they'll survive or produce here, although Dave Wilson Nursery has 2 varieties listed for zones 4-9. I have a spot that is 100% full shade in the summer but partial sun in the winter, with frequent breezes/good air flow.

I know I can grow plenty of other types of fruit here, but the father-in-law doesn't ask for anything, so I'm willing to sacrifice some space and plants to fulfill his request.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Forcefully Breaking Dormancy?
« on: May 29, 2019, 10:24:56 AM »
I have two trees I'd like to force out of dormancy if possible.

One is a new Spicezee nectaplum I got bare root from Ison's Nursery in GA nearly 2 months ago and the other is a small Shenandoah PawPaw which has been dormant (besides 1 small leaf bud in April that barely turned green and died back) since October/November. Both still have green cambium, and the other Spicezee I ordered is covered in leaves/my 3 other pawpaws are covered in leaves. Are there any hormones/chemicals or techniques for forcing these plants out of dormancy?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting Jujube
« on: April 22, 2019, 04:38:13 PM »
Tree service dropped a chinaberry tree on my baby jujube and snapped it to the graft. Can cuttings be rooted in a fog/mist cloner?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / "Southern" Pawpaw Source?
« on: March 01, 2019, 05:22:04 PM »
It seems as though Just Fruits and Exotics is all out of pawpaws, are there any other good sources for Florida/Gainesville/"Southern" varieties? I've got a small Mango and Shenandoah from Logees, but would like to acquire a few others.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Water before a Freeze?
« on: November 27, 2018, 02:58:30 PM »
I've heard conflicting advice about watering before a freeze:

-Don't water, as cells are more likely to rupture if fully hydrated
-Do water, as it increases mass/retains heat and makes cold damage less likely
-Fertilize with micronutrients before winter to prevent freezing (anti-freeze theory)

Should plants be watered or not before a light freeze? We're expected to get 32 for 1 hour in Jacksonville.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nursery Pot Sources
« on: October 29, 2018, 02:13:51 PM »
Looking for recommendations for online sources of pots (3g, 7g, etc, trays, etc) or local in NE Florida/Jacksonville. I've noticed there seems to be some wide variability between prices of various websites and also between dimensions/actual volume of the various pots between vendors (3.8g actual = 5g trade?).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Onion Taste?
« on: June 11, 2017, 12:58:55 PM »
I've got a Sweetheart Lychee producing for the first time in a 5 Gallon clay pot, and the fruit I've harvested so far have an "oniony" taste. They're bright red without blemishes/spots and the flesh is firm and juicy...  with a hint of chives... without the characteristic floral scent of a lychee. Any idea what could have caused this? Can it be fixed?
