Is the purple mangosteen self-pollinating?
« on: February 25, 2021, 08:34:38 PM »
I’m thinking of planting about 1 purple mangosteen tree (grown from seed). Will the tree fruit on its own?

Thank you.

Garcinia mangostana will produce fruit on it's own, the male plant of the species I read is extinct.

No pollination required and they dont have seeds just inclusion bodies

The seeds are not true seeds but vegetative bodies and many of the langsat group have a similar thing going on.

Sorry I am very confused can you add pictures of the “vegetate bodies” and explain why they aren’t seeds?
Sorry if this is too much to ask for
Cheers!

Mangosteen vegetative bodies look like seeds. They are clones. Usually, there are a few small ones that are mushy and can be easily chewed up and eaten, and one or 2 larger ones that look more like crescent shaped seeds, close to the length of a quarter's diameter.

This is half-true. They are produced without fertilization, but the mother tree's genes are recombined in new ways that produce offspring that are usually not an exact clone of the mother tree. Here's a study that did genetic analysis of mangosteen seedlings:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/236634822_Evaluation_of_genetic_diversity_among_and_within_mangosteen_Garcinia_mangostana_L_trees

Only 4 out of 18 seedlings were an exact match to the mother tree, with genetic similarity ranging from 59% to 100%.

I get it now. But then how do the seeds germinate if they don’t get pollinated?
Cheers!

There is considerable genetic variation in mangosteens and it is usually put down to them arising several times from different hybridizing events. The biggest and best seem to have far fewer seeds and this seems to have resulted in the common standard seedy type dominating as they are easier to propagate.

Great post! I learned something new today. It’s interesting how mangosteen can reproduce asexually due to the males being extinct.
