Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rotting seeds

What medium are you using to plant them in? (milled peat, etc.)  Are you using bottom heat?

First I tried paper towel and then seed starter mix. No bottom heat.

The flesh is sweet

Interesting. Not sure what it would be, but a sweet fleshed Rollinia is always good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Greenhouse humidity

I've heard that 80% humidity is good for ultra tropicals

Yeah I've heard the same. I'm just worried about rotting some of the orchids. My friend's corpse flower does fine in the greenhouse at 75%, which is one of the non-fruit ultra-tropicals I'll have in my greenhouse.

75% might be enough although more would be better than less I figure.  What temperature are you planning on, that could be more important than slight differences in humidity?

I have to see what heater I'm getting. I'll be using heating pads (or evaporative coolers if necessary) to supplement temps in the greenhouse if too cold.

Currently my greenhouse is under construction, but before I put in the humidity system I'm wondering if 75% humidity (that's what's best for orchids in general) is enough for ultra tropicals? The heat will be different since some will live on heat mats (in addition to the heater) but the humidity will be uniform.

Not many of the true dwarfs are that great.  There are vaious Cavendish type and Grand Nain but they will be basically a deluxe grocery store banana.

For taste, I love red bananas.  The Dwarf Red is execllent but will still get 8-9+ feet tall.

Raja Puri is an excellent banana that will get 6-8+ feet.

Two excellent bananas on the taller side are Pisang Raja and Kandrian.

Grocery banana sounds fine, but I'll also look at the others and see if they'll grow in my climate.

Truly Tiny are at best, average.  So not recommend if growing for eating quality.

Have you tasted Musa velutina? Plant is more grown for ornamental purposes.   Yes, the scant fleah can be eaten but again, not recommended based on quality.   Oh, make sure your dentist is on speed dial for when you bite down on one of the seeds.

Speaking of seeds, they can take many many month to germinate,  like 4-6 months. Germinating in a seed house with a seed mat would be beneficial.

Velutina is solely for ornamental purposes. I've heard good things about truly tiny, but if it is so bad, what dwarfs do you recommend for eating?

What are your height limits?

Well I'm looking for a dwarf for the greenhouse and maybe bigger ones for the house, though I'm getting blue java already.

Hi,

I am an old chef who recognizes nearly all foodstuffs, including exotic fruits. The picture was taken from a vehicle in Thailand or Vietnam (maybe Indonesia?).

I CANNOT find out what this is!!!

It's not durian, nor jackfruit, breadfruit or any other large fruit I am familiar with.

Maybe a mutant pineapple with the tops removed already? How do I post a pix of it?

Thanks for any ideas.

There's an "add image to post" function when you make the post.
