RootBuilder RootTrapper Bases, anybody know which side is up?
« on: January 18, 2020, 06:26:36 PM »
I bought several RootTrapper bases when I purchased the RB roll; finally putting together some pots and I realize I don't know which side should go up and there's no information on their website or the web that I can find. I thought the white side would be some type of peel-off, but it's not, it's very well secured to the other side. The other side is a fabric/mesh. The white side has very, very small pores (I *think*...that's how small they are). See pics.

Probably doesn't really matter, but it's also driving me crazy and I want to pot a few trees tomorrow. Anybody work with these before?

Mine came with "UP" stamped on the panels.

i think you have it right in your picture, the white faces away and the black towards the inside. on the fabric pots they make the white faces to the outside

I doubt it matters, but I agree black-up/white-down seems right

With these type of pots you dont want to have holes in the first few centimeters on the top like you see on Brians pots.
Its because when you pour water, the water will drain out through those holes instead of going in the soil.
Look if your pots have a side without holes and place that up.
Like this. The first 5 indentations from the top dont have holes to keep the water in the pot.
My pots were not somme original brand and DIY but you should get the idea.

Thanks guys. Yes, "UP" is clearly stated on the panels, it was the RootTrapper bases I was trying to figure out. I agree, probably not a crisis in the making either way. Hearing that the white faces out/down on their fabric pots gives me comfort. I'll pot a few like this and call the company on Monday to confirm I got it right.

The felt side traps the roots so it has to face the roots.

Seawalnut, What did you use for the side of your root pruning pots? I tried to find cheap alternative material to make them but had no luck.

Pokeweed, you can find generic/imitation rootbuilders by searching amazon/ebay/aliexpress for "air root pot".  I think these are significantly cheaper than the original.  They look like they should perform as well.  Not sure about sturdiness.  At least a few other forum members here are using them, I have only tried the original type.

SeaWalnut had posted in another thread what material he uses... something construction related.  He had to drill all those holes :)   might be worth it if its way cheaper though.  Also not sure of longevity if it doesn't have UV resistance

It is called dimpled membrane.Used for concrete foundations and basements here.
The rest is as Brian said.
They were an experimental type of pot and i lost all of those pecans growing in them because all the water had evaporated through the holes in winter .Like when you put clothes to dry outdoor on cold, freezing weather.
