First Fruiting of Bulala (Nephelium philippense)
« on: April 16, 2015, 07:06:51 AM »
The bulala is a fruit similar to pulasan and rambutan. The quality is not quite as good as those two, but still nice eating. It can be used as a rootstock for pulasan as they are compatible. The bulala is much more vigorous and faster growing than pulasan. It is native to Phillippines, but can also be found in Thailand. I think often this fruit is confused with pulasan, especially in southern Thailand.

Here you can see a comparison of bulala and some rambutans in front of it. Also some other fruits i picked today: giant purple starapples and mocambo (Theobroma bicolor).

I have a few seeds of bulala available if anyone is interested. PM me because it's not on my website yet.

Very nice. I wish I could be there to sample some of those, Oscar. I'm trying to grow as many Philippine fruits as I can, I'd be interested in seeds. :)

Is the seed cling an issue? As with native rambutan, which is called "supsupin" because of the need to suck the flesh off the seed, it took selection to bring clingfree fruit to propagation for market. I'd like for the people in southern Philippines to find a clingfree superior selection of this nephelium one day.

What did the Mocambo and Caimito taste like?

Yes seeds available. I PM'ed you. The fruit is slightly clinging, not tenacious clinging like some pulasans.
The mocambo tastes a bit like chempadek. Roasted seed is main part used, but i haven't tried doing that as the seeds are too valuable. Caimito tastes like regular caimito, just much bigger. In case you've never tasted caimito before they have kind of a sweet milk shake kind of taste, with a bit of jello consistency, especially in center.

Very nice! Do you have any idea, if this sp is maybe less tropical than rambutan and pulasan? Any info about water/humidity requirements?

Oscar,

I would guess so, but not 100% sure.

I don't know. You would have to research exact area of origin for answers to those questions. All i can tell you is that it is a lot more vigorous than pulasan, and that it is graft compatible with pulasan. I'm guessing using it as rootstock would extend pulasan range.

I've added bulala to my seed page, so anyone interested in seed can order directly from the seed website page.

How many of these trees are you growing, and where did they come from?

I've got a couple of trees. They're from my orchard in Hamakua.

Bulala trees fruiting again:

This is a good rootstock for pulasan. It might allow folks to grow it in areas where pulasan doesn't do so well as bulala is more vigorous and more hardy. Have seeds right now. You can order right from my seed page: http://fruitlovers.com/seedlist.html

It's mentioned in the Prosea book. The correct name should be Nephelium philippense. (I changed the subject heading spelling to show correct latin name now.) It's found in the Phillippines and in southern Thailand. It's often confused with the pulasan, to which it is obviously closely related.

Interesting :).....if it is native of philippine i think it's as tropical as Rambutan......How is the tree (shape, speed of growth, flowering period etc..) ?

I'm certainly no expert on the species, but I will share my experience. I ordered from Oscar last year, and the seeds arrived quick, and I planted them. There was some issue with my weather I think, but I managed 2 sprouts ... one was clearly a super plant, because it grew so fast. I repotted it, and it grew even more, starting to branch even. It grew to about a foot or maybe more or less by Winter and it remained healthy and vibrant. Sadly, it defoliated and I think died, but, here's the important part. It deteriorated, not because of my growing conditions, but it got infested with scale somehow(scale is a serious problem in my garden), and succumbed to the damage ... I tried my best to remove all the scale, and took the leaves off, but I think it was too late. I keep it in case it sprouts from the bottom ...

So, I had to put in another order. :) It's a pretty plant, and not more difficult to grow than a Longan ... keep an eye on pests though.

Not all parts of Phillippines are tropical. They have highlands and also quite a bit cooler on northern islands.

I have korlan growing outside here at perth. Do you think the bulala is as hardy? Definitely wanting another Sapindaceae.

I don't know because i don't know what part of the Phillippines it is native to. But i think it would be worth a try.

How well does Korlan handle your weather vs. Lychee or Longan?  Does it grow faster?  How well does it handle low humidity?

So far they handle the heat better than my lychee and the cool better than my dimocarpus longan ssp malesianus  they are in pots currently. Will take pics.
