Question:
Are ilama trees productive? Can it be kept in a container? What variety do you find as a good compromise between taste, production and easy of growing?
Thanks

Not a good candidate for container growing really...the tree seems to need a 25 gal pot at least...and will require a 100 gal before you know it (maybe in as little as 8 yr with proper care)

But with this said, I have one I'm trying to keep in a pot...it's about 3yr old from grafting (on illama rootstock), and it's in a 25gal, already asking to go into a 50gal, but I'm going to keep it rootbound and as small as possible.
Sounds like a pretty vigorous tree. I might have room for one in ground I planted two gefners. Is Genova red the best type?

Dont mean to hijack Adam's thread but he is correct, not a good long term candidate for a pot.  Will require a large pot sooner than later.

No variety is productive on its own.  Will require hand pollination for any chance at good production.   As far as taste, never met an ilama that wasn't good.

I have only tasted a few types, one was Guillermo, the other was a seedling...they were both red types, and excellent.

I hear there is lots of variation, so it can be a good idea to get a grafted tree, or at least seeds from a tree that is known to be of good quality.

Some of the rare varieties are small (about 4-6inch in plugs, but shippable), the largest plants are about 3ft tall (mostly red jabos and yellow jabos), and there are plenty of midsized plants about 1ft tall (vexator, coronata, Cambuca and others )

Myrciaria sp. (Grimal)
M. dubia
M. vexator
M. glazioviana
M. guaquiea
M. coronata var. Restinga
M. jaboticaba (Sabara)
M. jaboticaba var. Caipirinha
M. spirito-sanctensis
M. aureana
M. trunciflora
Plinia edulis (precocious type)

Ready by thanksgiving/Xmas

Myrciaria sp. (Escarlate)
M. glomerata

both are small and expensive!

How would you describe the Myrciaria sp. (Escarlate)

I have never tasted it, but have heard its much  like the red jaboticaba , but reportedly better tasting, and more precocious (fruiting in 3yrs from seed typically)

But if I'm not mistaken, it's the red jabo, back crossed to M. aureana.

So far the only negative attribute I can think of, is the fact that escarlate is much more sensitive to city water (or high pH) than the Red jabo.

As far as the appearance goes, it looks just like the red, but has larger and longer leaves.

My buddy just got one of your Red Jaboticabas and it looks great.  I am interesting in getting one as soon before the cold sets in.

unfortunately I'm not shipping Eugenia fruits, and Annonas now...just red jaboticabas when they are fruiting heavily, and seed sales are slow.

I do have some pitangatubas here for customers to taste...also some other random fruits:

red jabo (shipping more soon)
white jabo
blue jabo
lemon drop mangosteen
strawberry tree (muntingia calabura fruit)
ross sapote

(Eugenia reinwardtiana, and E. candolleana may be ripe soon)

I have to make sure they are still all available, but last time I checked I had these in plugs about 8-12inch tall:

Annona reticulata $8
A. glabra (few left $8, special type that's more compatible as rootstock)
A. squamosa (na dai) $8
A. montana $8
A. purpurea $12 (larger plants in one gal)
A. salzmannii $20 (still very small, very rare)

Meiogyne cylindrocarpa $5 (small, but 1yr old and shippable )
Rollinia deliciosa $10 (only a few left, over 1ft easy)

For Garcinia I'm low on inventory, but now I have:
G. intermedia $8, for small plant approx 6-8in
G. aristata $25 (old plants slow growing approx 12inch tall, 2 left) also have smaller ones for $8

(More garcinias coming soon...G. gardneriana, G. prainiana, G. xanthochymus, and more)

I'm not sure if the blue jabo is shippable (in my experience it's one of the most perishable varieties, and quickly ferments)

Although I have never shipped the lemon drop mangosteens, I assume they would be easy to ship...would cost about $2 per fruit (based on seed price)...but if someone orders a box of red jabo fruits and requests a lemon drop mangosteen, I can throw some in for free...(also muntingia fruits, and other small stuff I might have around)

For customers that come to visit the nursery, I have small amounts of fruit to taste for free.

yes but not sure how much longer I will have them:

cambuca $15-20ea in plugs about 7 inch tall (supposedly precocious type) might have a few larger specimens for $30-35 about 12-15 inch tall

have lots of small Grimals ($5 for the smallest about 4-5 inch tall, leaves look yellow, so they are discounted, but they all seem to do this, they are healthy for sure)  the next size up is about 7-9 inch tall $15 ea, deep dark green leaves, the next size up is approx 12 inch, those cost $25 ea, I have about 4 left of the largest size)
