Tropical Fruit Discussion / How are your trees growing right now?
« on: June 25, 2019, 06:33:31 PM »
After making a list of my trees (so I don't forget what I have) it made me wonder how stuff does in other people's yards

avocado:
catalina 2 months in ground, naturally starting to branch out 4 inches from the base
oro negro 2 years in ground, no flowers yet

canistel:
bruce 5 years in ground, never flowered. Very slow growing.

dragonfruit:
david bowie 5 years in ground, flowers but never sets
physical graffiti never gotten a flower
vietnamese jaina grows fast, every year it puts out some big fruits that don't have much flavor

guanabana:
Miami 5 years in ground, minor scale problem
2 seedlings that are 2 years old, minor scale problem

jackfruit:
r55-22 2 years in ground, 14 feet tall with a trunk as big as a street lamp post, lots of vegetative growth but it's only put out one flower
too many seedlings

mango:
honey kiss 1 year in ground set 1 fruit this year after half-flowering. The lowest maintenance tree in my yard
orange essence 2 years in ground no flowers. Not a very vigorous or pretty or disease resistant tree
sugar loaf 2 months in a flooded area. Very clean and moderately vigorous tree

passionfruit:
purple possum decent fruit, not as good as panama red but more productive. Too vigorous, but makes good mulch

sapodilla:
alano 1 year in ground. It was 8 feet long but about as thick as a pencil when I got it so I pugged it after it gave me 4 fruit that I picked too early but were still amazing. It fruits more than it grows.
molix 2 months in ground, has fruit on it now. This thing is more vigorous than my passion fruit. The leaves make it very ornamental.

white sapote:
younghans always chlorotic

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can anyone ID these trees?
« on: May 09, 2019, 01:34:06 PM »
Have a lot of these volunteers around my yard but don't really know what they are

any help is appreciated

The hurricane last year knocked over my soursop, got it back in ground but the roots were loose and it was fine for a while until it started getting cold then it started going downhill although some parts of it were still healthy. I cut it down today (4 feet above the ground) and everything above the part that hit the fence had some rot but everything below it seems fine.

The tree was a 15 feet tall 'Miami' soursop so it'll be a double graft, what should I put on it?

6
I have two mango trees right now: honey kiss (very late) and orange essence which is a mid season. I'm looking for one of the newer varieties that fruits outside their season. The spot that the new tree would go in has no wind, absolutely no shade, and it's on a slight slope so it's always dry. With that said I'm just looking for more info on these

PPK 'lemon meringue'
pros: ripens in may/june, productive, disease resistant, easy to know when to pick
cons: tree shape and fruit is susceptible to bacterial black spot

orange sherbert
pros: great taste, vigorous
cons: jelly seed, uneven ripening

Pickering
pros: precocious, dwarf, disease resistant, early season mango

sugar loaf
pros: coconut flavor
cons: ?

butter cream
pros: highly rated flavor
cons: ugly fruit

coconut cream
pros: coconut flavor, good growth habit, vigorous, disease resistant, ripens in June/July
cons: shy bearer in some areas, easily damaged by wind

what are your experiences with these trees?

7
Irma opened up a few vacancies in my yard so I was looking at the new Zill mangoes and couldn't find too much info on seasons except for Lemon Zest (mid season) and Honey Kiss (very late) even on the mango google doc list. Does anyone have info when Sweet Tart, Coconut Cream, Phoenix, and the other Zill mangoes ripen?

EDIT found some info

Coconut cream: June
Lemon zest: July
Sweet Tart: July
Pineapple Pleasure: July
Honey Kiss: August

not sure about the others like Phoenix, Orange essence, etc.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Advice on this Oro Negro avocado?
« on: April 07, 2017, 06:12:05 PM »
Transplanted this avocado a month ago and it has not taken it well even though I watered  it lightly every day maybe because it got kind of cold as soon as I moved it.

right after transplanting: http://i.imgur.com/Ymz9L9H.jpg

today after removing dead parts: http://imgur.com/a/IrF4J

should I get a new one or can it be saved?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need some advice with some trees
« on: March 04, 2017, 07:22:34 PM »
Having some minor problems with a Lemon Zest mango, Hasya Sapodilla, Red Morning jackfruit, Pace mamey, and Oro Negro avocado.

Mamey is growing slowly and something is eating it's leaves.

Jackfruit has weird spots and discolored leaves.

Avocado is recently transplanted since my neighbor's 5 year old cut and stabbed it for fun I moved it. So now it's oddly shaped and dealing with transplant shape, what should I do?

Sapodilla was dormant for a long time but is now starting to grow. Since it's pretty leggy it's growing horizontally, should I prune it?

Mango has browning tips/yellowing leaves, probably because I gave it some iron should I prune it? Also I think it has some flowers?

Pictures here: http://imgur.com/a/j1FBn they're pretty big pictures if you zoom in

10
My vietnamese jaina dragonfruit just gave me it's first ripe fruit so I'm curious what else fruits around this time. I know some avocados, sapodilla, and canistel will be in season now/soon but what else is there?

11
My Pace mamey got uprooted in a storm so I'm looking for a tree to replace it, considering green sapote but not sure how it grows down here. Anyone have experience growing them or tasted a south FL grown green sapote?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pressure cleaning
« on: May 05, 2015, 08:03:46 AM »
Have to pressure clean the roof every year because of the HOA and aside from using a tarp to cover everything, I'm not sure what to do to protect my trees from the bleach water used in pressure cleaning.

What do you do when you have to pressure clean your roof?

13
Even though it's mostly sand apparently a lot of land in Broward has a pH under 7 according to soil samples tested by UF and a few other places

https://www.google.com/fusiontables/embedviz?q=select+col6+from+1Y-EDT7Fb6Ws6zVGc2JSoNifqJEzCFniQOZbjX-24&viz=MAP&h=false&lat=37.696435496381916&lng=-93.5282267507812&t=1&z=3&l=col6&y=2&tmplt=3&hml=TWO_COL_LAT_LNG

click on the closest dot and look at the lab data. For example tree tops park has nothing but fine sand from 0cm all the way down to 203cm (6.6 feet) but the ph is between 5.1 and 5.9

Tropical Fruit Discussion / 2015 jackfruit recommendation ?
« on: April 06, 2015, 02:23:16 PM »
I've read a lot about jackfruit on this forum, read the red jackfruit debates, and read UF's site on jackfruit but I'm still undecided. I'm not picky when it comes to jackfruit but I already have a yellow flesh variety, the RS-22, so I'd like an orange or red fleshed one. I also have a few questions:

Black Gold X Tabouey : how big is the fruit? what color is the flesh? are they all seedlings?
MAI-1 / MAI-3 : how do they compare to some of the newer Fairchild/PIN cultivars?
J-31 : same question as above
are there any other varieties I should look into besides the new PIN ones?

15
For example:

mango: maha chanok VS any of the new Zills.
jackfruit: black gold/NS1/J-#/mai-# VS any of the new fairchild/PIN varietes that just came out

and whatever else has gotten more breeding done lately... are there any must-have classic trees or are all the newer types just improved versions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are some flood tolerant trees?
« on: March 14, 2015, 02:53:54 PM »
I have an area left for fruit trees but it's on a slight slope about 3 feet from a canal. During the wet season the water rises up about 1-3 feet for a few days or more if the rain is really heavy.

What trees can survive being underwater for a few days?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Typical yield of your annonas?
« on: February 20, 2015, 03:27:27 PM »
How many fruits do you guys normally get on your sugar apple, custard apple, atemoya, cherimoya, rollinia, ilama, and guanabana trees?

18
I don't want to leave the ground between my fruit trees bare so I want to put something there so it's not just a mix of sand and weeds wherever a tree's not growing. What do you guys use to make your yard better?

19
All my trees ended up dying in November/December because finals and my vacation coincided with when the home owners association decided to turn off everyone's sprinklers for some reason. If they were established they probably would've made it, but they were all pretty young. Anyway instead of getting mad about it I decided to just replant with some lower maintenance trees.

I was thinking along the lines of:
Sapodilla
Jackfruit
Soursop (Guanabana)
Banana (Namwah, Rajapuri)
Canistel
Mango
Mamey
White sapote

Since my soil is the native limestone sand I think those trees would be good since they can handle alkaline soil that doesn't hold any water. Will those be fine in regards to pests/diseases and yield?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are these trees? Breadfruit?
« on: October 17, 2014, 02:20:24 AM »
Broward college has a bunch of old trees on campus of sapodilla, ginep, avocados, bananas, etc. and I learned there was a breadfruit somewhere on campus, are either of these breadfruit trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Killing seedlings for science
« on: October 04, 2014, 04:47:12 PM »
Checked in on my seedlings and found out a lot more germinated than I expected, pretty much 100% germination on everything aside from the abiu which was 50% but still more than I was expecting. Instead of just throwing out my surplus of Annona Muricata, White Sapote, and Abiu seedlings I decided to see if they would grow in the watery organic muck near the lake by my house. I don't expect them to live, but I'll track their progress here anyway.

22
growing out of the trunk of a tree like a jackfruit?

I don't know what ripe ones look like, but the unripe fruit is brown with kind of rough melon-ish skin. I'm not sure how big they get but last time I saw them they were between the size of a softball and a basketball.

23
Tropical Fruit Discussion / Recommendations for last 3 fruit trees?
« on: September 05, 2014, 09:43:08 AM »
It's bothering me that I have space not being utilized but I'm not really sure what to plant. It has to have a fairly upright habit or at least be able to be pruned to about 8 feet wide. All 3 spots get 8+ hours of full sun and get hit by sprinklers 2-3 times a week. Also since I'm in South Florida the soil is rocky, alkaline, and full of nematodes so they should be able to handle our bad "soil"

So far I have:
redlands white sapote
australian white mulberry
miami soursop
violette de bordeaux fig
rajapuri banana
namwah banana
dwarf cavendish banana
physical graffiti dragonfruit
david bowie dragonfruit
vietnamese jaina dragonfruit
coconut cream mango
hasya sapodilla
RS-22 jackfruit
Bruce canistel
Pace mamey

So, what do you recommend?
