Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jackfruit tasting
« on: July 20, 2021, 04:03:46 PM »
This is a seedling jackfruit tree, not sure of the age, it was removed from my friends house when he moved. Lots of flowers but only a handful of fruit this year. It’s a slow growing tree. It’s soft flesh, but the flavor is very sweet and intense, this one in particular even had a kerosene aftertaste. My wife can’t eat jackfruit because of latex, but she can eat this jackfruit. It’s easy peel and a good amount of rag is sweet and edible. Seeds are the size of grapes but some are the size of peas. Fruit average 10 pounds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fiberless mango ?
« on: July 20, 2021, 02:32:02 PM »
I think almost every mango seed has some minuscule amount of fiber, especially around the circumference edge (that wouldn't be noticable other than by scraping the seed with one's teeth or scraping clean with the edge of a knife) but not that runs through the edible flesh.  I wouldn't qualify that as fiber free vs having fiber.

VP and Pickering both have a minimal amount of unobjectionable fiber in the flesh.  I have eaten literally hundreds of LZs and never seen any comparable to these with respect to fiber in the actual flesh.

Rob, no objectionable fiber in the LZs, just a few strands from scraping the seeds with my teeth. I always appreciate dietary fiber as long as it’s not in excess like a Tommy Atkins.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: NDM vs Maha chanok
« on: July 20, 2021, 02:25:05 PM »
You should try the fruit before you plant the tree.
It doesn't matter which one I like better
I really enjoyed maha this year and I have been giving away my
NDM. I personally think lemonzest is OK and others think it's #1.
Everyone is different

You aren’t alone, I have enjoyed maha too, even more than lz, but that’s a great mango also, In regards to the question, they are different enough to grow both.

The lemon zests I have had weren’t totally fiberless, especially near the seed. On another note, finally had some great malikkas, they have less fiber than Lz and taste just as good as long as they ripen well.

Lots of good early mangos but towards the end of the season I still have orange sherbet still ripening. My trees have been productive and disease resistant. The fruit are around a pound and if the flavor is mild then it’s likely picked too soon.

Alex doesn't give huge props to Mallika on his website, saying it's highly prone to MBBS.  What are others experiencing?

One of the healthiest tree here.

My mahas has been great. Consistent quality, some years they are as good as any. Bulletproof tree with reliable production. Mine has been gradually ripening for the past month, and there are still quite a few green ones left.

Tommyng, did you grow the Pim Seng Mun mangos? They were my favorites at a tasting many years ago, and I haven't had any since then. I'm waiting for my seedlings to produce, but will probably need to hunt some out next season.

My best friend grows it, it’s a unique flavored mango ripe. I like it also and It tastes like longans and you can eat it green.

Tried quite a few already but I like strong flavored mangos and so far carrie has been on top. Last year they seemed washed out but were really medicinally flavored this year. Second would be Kathy, then sweet tart and peach cobbler, 23-2, Maha and lemon zest about equal, pim seng min, The rest were good to average and still some left to try.

You hear reports of this and that but Brad is actually growing both and has given you first hand account of what the differences are. Hass can grow in Florida, I have one growing in my yard right now and it’s full of fruit.

I agree with Rob, it’s ok.

I had a carrie today. It still had some green on it and it was firm to the touch. It smelled good so decided to eat it. It’s just a different flavor profile than say Kathy, sweet tart, and other  indochinese mangos, but it was delicious. I enjoy a resinous and medicinal flavor and this mango had it. It was one of the favorites of the season and eaten at this stage it wasn’t mushy.

Good job it looks great! It takes a lot of patience to do this.

A dog helps but what really helped was cutting and trimming trees that bordered fruiting trees so the squirrels couldn’t jump from one tree to another. They don’t like traveling by ground when there was dog around.

This is a Kathy (k3) (kryptonite), we just ate. Picked a week ago and ripened in the rice bin. The color is uneven and so was the taste, the yellow parts were sweeter and the greener areas had more acid to them, but every part was superb. It was a wonderful eating experience where you can taste all levels of ripeness. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a mango this much. The taste was in the indochinese group, no resin, no fiber, edible skin.. The seed was poly. On a side note , this fruit was from a graft I did last summer on a mature tree.

The reason I ask is this season and last season I obtained a couple of peach cobblers from South Florida. We put them in a box and check them every day until they softened up a bit. It wasn't as good as advertised I've heard some folks claim that it can have a tangerine Citrus flavor. I was just curious to see if anyone would mention this variety

Peach cobbler, are one of the few varieties that rarely disappoints.I picked one last week and just ate it,  and it was excellent. I really appreciate mangos with a wide window of great taste, even if flvor may vary during that time.

How do you judge when to pick do you eat them immediately after picking or do you let them set on the counter for a few days.

Some are early this year, but I pick them when they show a dull yellow and/or have black dots on the top, probably from leaking sap. You can eat them then but I like to eat them when they get a little soft. I’ve eaten them over a week past picked and they still taste good but it’s less acidic.

Mallika as well, picked about a dozen already at green to slight yellow stages to test ripe and so far it’s been quite disappointing. They had a musky scent and taste like a bad cantaloupe. I’ll let them get more yellow and even full colored before I decide the trees fate.

I have three kids under 6 and they love mangoes, Nam doc mai, glenn, Mahachanok, O2, , basically anything with no fiber and sweet they will gobble it down.

You are not alone, I appreciate some of the older varieties just as much as the newer ones.

It tastes good but mushy, I like to use them for smoothies.

Lmao that must be what happened. It's ridiculous waiting this long 😂 I guess I could continue to wait or just cut it down and give up on it

At this point just keep it because it will fruit soon, in the meantime you can cut off a branch and graft some varieties onto it.

Well, it looks like the manzano clumps I get sometimes where the bananas go every which way.

E4 is a nice tree and tastes great, it also has a wide period of great flavor.. I’ve had PP but a majority were just average with a couple being exceptional, like fruit punch which also has a narrow window of being perfect. Sweet tart, that’s another one with a long period of excellent flavor. That said, I grow all of them because they are good mangos.

No Glen for me -- just bland tasting.

Gotta speak up, because this is just not true for everyone, or probably anyone with a few trees ("bottom tier"). Glenn has been the most productive and consistent of my trees. Fruit is good, sometimes very good. Clean, fiberless, juicy, and sweet. Has peachy aroma and taste as well. Not complex enough, I will admit. But still a really good mango when grown right.

I've had bland Glenns, probably were hit with nitrogen or grown up north (anywhere north of Miami; don't know how ya'll can stand the cold!).

My sense is Glenn does better down here south of Miami, and likes limestone soil, and no nitrogen.

My Glenns are quite nice, sweet and peachy.

I don't doubt that other people grow crappy or subpar Glenns.

Its the perfect mango for my wife and youngest kid, wouldn't dream of chopping it.

Will start breakfast with a Glenn, then a coffee, and will go from there...

I like Glenns, it’s my wife’s favorite mango. The kids like them and so do friends. It’s a pleasant mango, and not messy so I usually grab one and eat it whole on the way to work. It is always reliable.
