Cherry of the Rio Grande - Seed True?
« on: March 25, 2020, 07:47:17 PM »
Hi,

I have one Cherry of the Rio Grande in my backyard in Southern CA. I was wondering if the seeds grow true?

Thanks

I think Most Eugenias are self pollinating which implies it will pollinate
itself. I have 3 Eugenia calycina and 3 different Eugenia involucrata flowering now so
I would think my seedlings could vary. I have one COR that has 500 flowers every year
and I am lucky to get 50 fruit? This year I had 2 more COR flower at the same time
and I am anxious to see if the fruit set increases?

Okay, thanks. I just want to grow some more from the seeds it produces. Mine seem to set fairly well alone.

Mine is pretty small in a pot but made like 5 flowers a month back or so. None made fruit but the tree has grown a good deal in that time. Do CoR fruit more than once a year near Orlando area?

How big is yours achetadomestica to get 50  a season?

I have 4 different COR and 2 different Eugenia calycina. I have a Eugenia calycina
that is my favorite so far. Every single flower sets. It had about 250 flowers a couple weeks
ago and the fruit is half grown. The COR that has 50 fruit a year got blown over from Irma
and has never been the same after I staked it. There are allot of fruit that set this year and
they taste great just like a cherry. It doesn't have much leaves and I am hoping the fruit sizes
up? It is proabably 8' now. The Eugenia calycina I like so much is about 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide.
It has larger fruit and also tastes great. I have 2 other smaller E calycina that are growing the same way.
More of a bush then a tree.

Very cool. Do CoR fruit multiple times a year in our area or is this early spring bloom the only one?

Some of my trees are just beginning to fruit. The E calycina fruited once last
Spring. My original COR which is pushing 10 years usually fruits in the Spring and
then flowers sparingly all Summer and has a couple fruits every week. I may be
doing something wrong because I have heard many people say they get multiple crops
per year from Pitomba, grumichama, and other Eugenias. My trees are usually once a
year heavy in the Spring producers. My Eugenia candolleana produces late in the Fall.
